Default Limited Funds - what should i do?

ok, just spent loads on having a rebuild and loads of new bits on the car....only prob now is the gearbox, it will get ripped apart if i try putting 400ish bhp & torque. So considering im running low on funds what should i do?
Its a 1996 RA engine, (must be able to get upto 160+ mph and still have good short 1-4 ratios.

realistcly ive got about 1500k - 1800MAX to spend on it plus my standard box to px or sell

so what would you do? or any offers?

I would think go for the 6 speed box if you cant wait. Or just wait until you can get a ppg or similar. The costs will soon ad up to that of a decent box if you are having to replace the existing one when it breaks.

And also the money that gets wasted buying things that end up being sold a couple of moths down the line because it never suited your original plans it all adds up....

There are 5 speeders with PAR/PPG's on sale to I think.

If you buy a 6 speeder for about £1600 and it doesn't work for you you can sell again for the same $$$

graham....any thoughts on this, if i buy an sti ra box with dccd (752) one which i can get cheap, would it cost alot/be possible to have a longer 5th gear into it so i could get well past the stupid 112? also do you think they would be strong enough to hold 400/400

What exactly is needed to put a 6 speeder into a classic? Does it make a difference if its a classic UK or classic WRX? Could it be done in a home garage given enough time/decent set of tools and car lift?

The gearbox does not limit the RA's to 112 mph. I have an STI 3 RA and in 5th gear it travels at 19mph per every 1000rpm- So theoretically if taken to the 8250 redline it can reach over 150 mph.

If it was in good condition an absolute gift.
The 5 speeders will not tolerate 400 lbft of torque for long, but my Sti v3 has tolerated 370 for 3 hard years.
With respect they will last.

Fitting a tall 5th will generate a big gap between 4th and 5th and on an RA box you will be in 4th v quickly.
The only issue with the RS 5th are the revs while cruising, 6500 at 85 is so tiring it's untrue.

The Sti ratios are a great compromise and with 400 x 400 prob better suited as you have the torque to pull the taller ratios.

The best box is the TV 754 series 5 speeders with new guts and a ppg gearset from Zen.

Be careful with the rear diff ratio when buying one for a box as there are no numbers to tell you what the ratio is. you can count them through the oil filler plug!

Also on the rear diff:
If you are fitting a viscous lsd you must have the extended driveshaft for the rear off side or the diff will act as an Open unit...

Have to disagree with you there mate. I added to a six speed to my UK classic and for me it made the car. Admittedly I am running higher than average power ( 380bhp )but its made the car much more drivable although I would have to admit I am forever changing gear.

If its the one in the Ebay link then it comes with a 4.1 front diff which will match your MY94 diff, see here.

It doesn't say and you cannot see the transfer box but I assume it'll be 1:1 which is what you need. Considering its for a rally car you may get lucky and find a DCCD, or of course it may not come with a transfer box at all - in which case the one from your car will bolt straight on.

Maybe marginally due to the added gear change but its certainly more drivable and improved it no end as a road car. Saying that acceleration dropped drastically is a massive overstatement. Mr car does 0-60 in 3.8 secs with a UK 6 speed. It gives higher top end speeds too.

Default 380 makes you pee

dazdavies, what work was needed to fit yer 6 spd? (setup at the wheels (19s)and the drives etc). Been thinkin bout a 6 since I got it, but set ups put me off cause of the precision factor = mare spondoolies. Like you've said I thought it might balance the drive and prevent the cringing when givin a bit shoe (the eating the gears thingy).

'Weight issues' are good, just lose it elsewhere chaps......restricting the good ladys pie & cake allowance, an an empty sack does the trick. nae spankin oan the hard shoulder though.

"I'm making my car go faster officer,"

"6 box aye? carry on sir, let us know if you see any**** wanki, I mean masterbating about here, drive safely sir" .

sorry, aye, gearboxes daz, cheers.

was your car an RA or have an RA gearbox fitted ??? the reduced acceleration on my car when the 6 speed was added was very noticeable !!!
