OK......listen to this.

Last week I started to feel a crunching sensation at very low speed, ie; tickover, forwards or reverse, to the rear nearside of my P1.

Bearing in mind I have done several track days this year and the last 3 on slicks, I was under the impression it may be the wheel bearings.

After taking the car into my local Subaru garage they subsequently put the car on a lift and ran the cars wheels whilst in the air........it was diagnosed as the diff. A brand new diff was replaced and I picked the car up but sadly the problem was still there !!!!!

Wheel bearings were ordered and the car booked back in yesterday.

On stripping down the wheel hubs etc.....the bearings were fine !

The propshaft was inspected.....changed over to a brand new one but again all was OK.

In the end they thought they had found the problem......rear nearside CV joint.......offside inspected it was spinning freely and with ease.....nearside was crunchy/notchy when turned so a replacement was ordered.

Picked the car up today after being told it had been tested and sorted but alas it was not !!!!!

Whilst the notchy/crunchy feeling is still there it is no-where as bad but still apparent ???? The dealer is at a loss.......everything has been inspected from the handbrake.....brakes to the prop etc.....but we are all mystified

The car, 2 weeks ago was uprated to DMS Gold suspension ?

It had ( 3 months ago ) uprated anti-roll bars.

It had ( 1 month ago ) 4 new Goodyear F1 225 x 35 x 18 Tyres.

FOR GOD'S SAKE......WHAT IS IT.....ANYONE KNOW ?

Mellow we've had cars in that had rear bearing wear, that was not detectable by trying to check for play by moving the road wheel.

Changing the bearing cured the problems.

This is not a crunching sound though, more of a constant drone.

Just a thought, back your dampers fully off, drive the car, then do the same with them fully on. Aftermarket dampers do create more noise, especially when its cold.

what about the centre diff?

I can't imagine they have stripped the gearbox to check that.

Is it worse when cornering?

Its sounds like a similar noise to when trying to corner on a partially locked type r diff, so perhaps the diff is allowing some slip and when the slack is taken up it locks again. I am not sure if this is possible as I cant remember if the centre diff is mechanical on non type r/type ras.

Question

Pete.....I'm thinking down the same lines as you here, it's the only thing that hasn't been checked/looked at.

Ironically after having the rear nearside CV joint replaced the problem whilst still there quietened somewhat, however, as I've said at tickover almost stalling speed back and forth it's not a noise you can hear outside the car but you can inside.....also the sensation is a rotational clicking type noise....? baffling !

Down at TSL tomorrow for other things, they'll have a peep too.

Had a 200 mile blast today and everything seemed fine.......that 22B is starting to look more and more attractive by the day

Frustrated (will post the result tomorrow hopefully )

OK.......I went down to TSL on Friday and firstly I was having some new Toyo's fitted, graham experienced my problem and thought it could've been an "egg" in the tyre......it wasn't.....so everything was checked....and re-checked from the prop to the cv's.....all was OK....then their mechanic took the car out himself after all the other work was done and came back to confirm that it was in fact THE BLOODY DRUMMOND GOLD SUSPENSION.....fitted only a month ago but went on to say that it was normal and was the strut travel I could feel etc....!!!!! the car was put on the ramp again to check out the DMS's and they were fine....a quick phone call to AVO to confirm that up to 1mm of flex was allowed between the sleeve and the piston within (behind the gaitor).....so all was re-confirmed OK.

However, interesting to hear your comments Sam.....I'm starting to think there may be something in that......but why would I feel the crunching sensation to the nearside rear !!?

I'll probably know soon enough eh

hi mellow

i had an intermittent vibration through the whole of the car. that really got bad when i was going to cadwell park. was worst at low speed than high speed. an then at cadwell the gear box exploded in the middle of a straight section!!!!! the reason behind it if you get a tooth of one of the gears stuck in the diff kind of thing. to was impossible to diagnose by any one.

Cheers sam.....I remember the incident at Cadwell ....glad you got it sorted.

Different sympton to the one you describe though so I'll have to see how I go on, been on a 220 "spirited" drive around the Lakes today and everythings still OK.

I have an excellent wedding night joke/story I can offer you by the way, I'll mail it to you.....laughs galore
