Unhappy Help!: Is it about to blow?

My MY00 sounds like there's something seriously wrong with it.

When I lift off, I can hear a rattling type of noise. Sounds kinda like, well, a bag of spanners being shaken. Sometimes it sounds vaguely like a fan going round and one of the blades catching on the housing as it rotates slowly.

I first noticed it about a couple of thousand miles ago, but it was very subtle. Since then it's almost as if it comes and goes, or maybe it's always there but just drowned out by the exhaust. Then on Sat night when I lifted off in 4th it sounded really ruff, and I half expected the car to conk out. I quickly made the change to 5th and it didn't sound quite as bad then, or for the rest of the journey.

The car drives as well as ever. No problem with the gears, pulls cleanly, boosts as normal. Mileage is high, currently 113k (miles).

I would take it straight round to my mechanic, but he's away for another week.

Any ideas? (Plain English, please )

Thx.

Sounds like a heat shield problem, they rust a fall to bits. Have a look around the down pipe, the welds rust through where it is tacked to the pipe, this allows the sheiding to rattle.
Cross pipe and up-pipe also have these heat shields.

Bag of spanners - instant diagnosis is heatshields.

Once engine is warm and the rattle appears you should be able to lift the bonnet and use the throttle body to increas and hold revs until you locate it.

There are quite a few, usual suspects are the downpipe and drivers side headers.

Had a quick look the other morning when the car was still cold. Found that the lambda sensor wasn't fully tightened and was loose enough that it rattled a bit. Tightened up now, and so far so good. Will keep an eye on the heatshields.

Glad it was nothing serious.

Oh, I don't know, mate. Would be the perfect excuse for dropping in a new engine, turbo, i/c, etc....

If the probe was loose it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the air/fuel ratio checked out to make sure the thing is working ok?

Good thinking. Will look into it.

Cheers for that.
