"Whirring" noise from rear
I've got a classic, sport special (late on a 51 plate) last night i noticed a whirring noise comin from the rear of the car. I don't think it's the bearings - could it be a problem with the diff oil???? Anyone else encountered the same?
Cheers Howie

I've checked the diff oil - thats ok, checked the wheels - there is no bearing movement. The noise is more noticable when you come off the accelartor and then gets slower until you reach 1500-1200 revs when it then stops. Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

Does it get noisier when you corner on a smooth surface (a sort of singing noise, and more in turning one way than the other). My 03 STi did this and it turned out to be NSR wheel bearing, cost a lot as I'd knackered the hub as well. All sorted for me by Scoobyclinic, main dealer fobbed me off telling me me it was tyre noise just as the warranty ran out, more fool me for believing them.
Edit to say: Just 'cos there's no play in bearing doesn't mean its OK.

D1ccy - No it doesn't get noiser as i corner. It's most notable as you come right off the accelerator and the revs decrease then it stops at about 1200 revs. I'm worried this is when the pressure on the AWD drive to the back stops - meaning maybe a drive shaft bearing.

Best idea is to go to a specialist and get them to put it on a ramp and then run it and go round with a stethoscope. Scoobyclinic did this for me, found the wheel bearing and sadly a tunnel gearbox bearing which meant the box had to come off, at least this was a good excuse for an uprated clutch.
