Sounds like the 'box has had it.....
Could be just the control unit for the box, but I suspect it's time to source a replacement from a breakers. Make sure that you get one that's matched to the rear diff......
C'mon peeps, someone must know the ins and out of a Subaru autobox?

Sounds like the box needs looking at.
As a quick check have a look at the colour of the oil in the box. It should be as clean as the day it went in. If it's a dirty dark colour, it's a fair bet there are problems inside the box

I don't know much about auto boxes but have had a couple of cars with them before.
It may be possible for adjustments to be made on the box for the gearing but you'd need to find a manual for that.
I had a Ford once which would only go into reverse when the oil was cold and wouldn't go in at all when the oil was hot. i.e. You could shift into reverse but you couldn't feel the engagement and the car wouldn't move when you pressed the accelerator, it would sometimes shudder trying to move, but more often than not, it wouldn't do anything.
There were adjustments which could be made but didn't improve matters much ultimately.
A reconditioned box was the only cure.

For that money you could have had my 95 N wagon with API engine rebuild and a manual box which works!
Sounds to me mate as if its gonna be a gearbox rebuild. I put about £500 notes to one side.
Bad luck
