Why f*ck about with it? Imprezas dont benefit from aftermarket filters (with the exception of a Japanese STI filter) and 'induction kits' are about as much use as a ****-flavoured lolly.

MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor. Its that big box in the pipe after your air filter box. Having a cone reduces the stability in this pipe that the box helped maintain. This causes it to move and vibrate, thus causing the sensor to break and your engine to go bang and your bank manager to go "How Much!!!"

I think its something to do with fuel and ecu...So youre saying that using for example a blitz filter....would be dangerous?? best to use the existing airbox/panel filter?? where can one get one and for how much??

Another vote for the Green cotton panel filter here
but having said that, I used a K+N induction kit for over 12 months on an RB5 that ran perfectly well, swapped it once for an STi panel filter and the car felt as stifled as **** afterwards!!....avoid them

i understood there were no benefits to be gained from the cone suggestion until your tuning for 400bhp+. I've fitted one to a car in the past, it sounded good but destroyed the performance.
Got myself a green panel filter - does the job.
