Default Noise from rear axel???

my dads impreza is whining(roaring!!) at rear end noice/pitch increases with speed, could this be a worn bearing somewhere (do they have rear wheel bearings?) or possibly a worn diff? there does not seem to be any oil dripping from it, and anyway the noise has just suddenly appeared. can anyone point us in the right direction as to what it could be, and if there are any instructions anywhere of how to replace offending item( where is a haynes manual when you need it!!)

thanks in advance

if the noise changes when turning corners then I'd expect it to be a wheel bearing.

If not, could be a diff related problem.

btt for any other thoughts on my problem,

thanks for post andy,
it happens on straights and as i said the pitch increases with speed, it does sound like a wheel bearing noise, but as i am not familiar with this type of noise on a 4x4(i have owned this car myself and a turbo) i am not sure if you would expect a wheel bearing to go at rear, or do the half shafts go??
any advise welcolme, esp if you can detail what to dismantle to check. (the car has done 90 odd thousand miles)

regards
dave
