Question Headgasket Help

Hi all,

Advice needed.

I'm part way through a headgasket change (engine in the car) on a 1995 WRX import. I've followed the manual without any issues (apart from it being an awkward cuss to work on and I've nearly stripped every thing off ready to remove the heads.....

However, I've run into a problem on the R/H (drivers) side....and the manual only covers removal of the LH side!!!

Looking at the top rear of the head, there is a bracket mounting the turbo - 2 bolts and the oil feed pipe to the turbo. Do I need to remove the turbo completely or can I leave the turbo in place and remove the bolts to the turbo bracket?

Also, the oil feed pipe from the head to the turbo looks like it is a press fit into the head, with a banjo union into the turbo. Do I just undo the turbo union? If not, How does the pipe come out of the head?

Apart from that, I think I'm there.....apart from understanding what caused the headgasket to blow in the first place.

thanks in advance

The turbo oil feed pipe has a banjo bolt at either end. Disconnect it from the head and the turbo and remove.

The bracket you are talking about bolts to the top of the exhaust uppipe.
It'll probably make removing the cyl. head easier if you take it off completely.

Didn't know you can do HG's with the engine in, all garages I've spoke to say engine out - I assume to the pro's its easier / quicker that way?

I was told it can be done...and it's proving to be the case. just gets a little tight at times. The biggest hold up is me taking my time to ensure I get it right.....thank goodness that there's you guys on Scoobynet to get things back on track...
