Default Defi oil temp reading vs dipstick tube temp reading

When at the MOT the other gettin the emmison test done, they put a temp probe down the dip stick tube to show the oil temp. The temp it gave was a lot lower than what I had on the defis. By reving the engine at 3K for a small while he bought it up to 80oC but all the time the defis where indicating about 90+

So should I really be relying on the defi reading to know when to blast it?

The only thing I can think of is that the defi sensor maybe at the end of the oil pump circuit where it has picked up the temp from the engine?

Question

I'd THINK that oil temperature in the SUMP, (via the dipstick) would be slightly lower than that taken above a cylinder, where the defi o/t sender tends to be.

As for 10 degrees less? Dunno.

Someone will be along in a minute who does though, IMHO

Having measured both with my defis, the temp in the sump is often 10+ degrees lower than that in the galleries, as Alcazar suggests.
