Question cams .... wtf?

well it had to happen- after all this recent talk of larger capacity engines.. I keep seeing cams mentioned in terms of 'wild' cams, wrc cams etc??

can someone plz explain exactly what it means to change cams from standard, what they do to the characteristics of the subaru engine (pick and EJ series ), and driveabilty and any disadvantages etc ?

not going to jmup in with both feet - just looking for solid BS free info please
(search is only good to a point)

pretty purlease?

Out of interest David what head castings are you using? Did you use your orginal pre97 ones? IIRC the group A rally cars (i.e before 97) used the orginal castings but junked the HLA and went shimed.

Tony.

Moneys better spent in other areas until your looking for over 500 bhp in my opinion.

Andy

Thats if you run the OE retainers which I wouldn't recommend. With the retainers/springs, fitting, shimming, timing in etc its an expensive way to go.
Cheaper dropping in a 2.5 !!

As andy said its an expensive way to go.. and there are better gains to be had elsewhere before its worth changing cams. The machining on the jun cams isnt the best either.

Tone,

I run sti3 heads, ported and polished. I have billet valves, double valve springs.. and fancy shims / retainers. oh and cams wilder than JUN 272's but std cam timing at the moment..

Now if you can find me some cheap vernier cam pulleys for phase 1

David

Question

like I say- not thinking about cams as it were, merely puzzled by the constant repeated mentions on the big engine threads both on here and 22b

in reference to DW's comments on the 2.33 thread; is there a sliding scale of performance for cams?

ie:

stock, WRC, wild ???

how are the terms defined? etc.. would search google- but have work to do
