Question Boost Control Valves - Advice / Views

Just bought myself a boost control valve (appears to be a spring mechanism wound in or out to adjust boost) that fits inline.... a set and "forget" job.

Question for you techies out there.. Firstly, what's the general opinion on these ..? Waste of time ? Or cheap mod ?

Whats the safest boost I should be looking to run without a turbo upgrade ? Currently at 0.5

On a MY97 UK Car, and looking to squeeze a little more out without spending a fortune.. Only done K&N and Exhaust system so far.

If not a complete waste of time, where should it be installed ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Drew

Drew,

I use a dawes device, same as yours I would imagine.

Its on an MY98 WRX and works a treat. Got mine set at 1.2 bar.

Couple of thoughts for you.

1) A knocklink is a very good idea if upping the boost as is any device that monitors air/fuel ratios.

2) I dont have much knowledge of UK cars but 0.5 bar? is wastegate pressure if I am right. Have you got a pipe straight from the turbo to the wastegate? bypassing the boost control valve that the ECU operates. It could be a faulty control valve though.

Says it should be installed between the "Boost Source" and "Wastegate"...

Thanks mate...

Running the Boost gauge straight off of the manifold.. seem to remember someone saying that the Uk cars only run at .5 (tiny turbo...) but should be able to handle upto .7 or thereabouts...

Excuse ignorance, but where should it be installed... ?

Does it have a ball bearing that is kept on its seat with a spring, then length of which is adjustable?

Think So... Would be a "T" peice but one of the arms replaced with the thumbscrew.. Wind out for reduced pressure and in for increased....

Thanks John.

Default Shorten the spring to reduce boost ?

John - Just taken apart, and yes, ball bearing and a length of spring.

If she's overboosting and engine is cutting (safety cut ?), should it simply be a case of shortening the spring to reduce resistance ? Its wound right out now..

Think I just answered that myself... hazey logic this time of night

Wound right out = long spring = should be lower boost.
