Unhappy 6 Speed Gearbox + Rear Diff Issues - help!

I've got a 2002 UK WRx and for many months I've been trying to sort purchase of a UK 6 speed box and suretrac diffs....Now that I'm almost there with the purchase, a guy at "Grade A" says I must buy the rear hubs and rear brakes to go with a R180 rear diff to make it fit.

I thought the box and diffs could all be fitting with just the front and rear shafts, prop, selector, and the spider thing (fork?), and the existing hubs would do nicely....What is right?

If you have a UK wrx and have sourced a UK 6 speed, then all you need to make the 6 speed fit is the 6 speed itself and the prop shaft, thats it, nothing else.

Agree with Steven, providing you are using a UK WRX and a UK 6 speed everything just bolts up, no need for the rear diff change, use your existing one.

and for the Thick People Reading please be aware that they are talking about a 2002 UK WRX not a cheap wrx.

Question

Sorry guys, think I should of explained more...what I need to know is what's required extra to fit the euro uk rear suretrac R180 rear diff.

I'm sure the front shafts are also required to fit a UK 6 speed box to a 2002 UK Wrx, is that wrong?

In all, I want to fit the UK 6 speed and suretrac diffs and need to know exactly what's needed.

Right, fitting a UK 6 speed to a UK 2002 WRX, yes?

Required
UK 6 Speed, which contains the suretrac front diff.
Sti7/8/9 Propshaft.

Thats it, nothing else

You dont need to change the front driveshafts.
You dont need to install an R180 rear diff, which to my knowledge isnt a suretrac, except possibly a P1 R180 rear diff.

The standard R160 rear diff you have on the UK 2002 WRX will work perfectly well.

Why do you need to fit the R180 rear diff?

If you choose to fit the R180, you will need matching rear driveshafts, matching rear hubs, and brakes that will match the hubs.

Hi m8,

Cheers for the info...I want to change the rear diff to a suretrac item as I've found the power the car currently produces can cause the diff to go "lock to lock" and its fun, but dangerous...hence wanting a suretrac item, which is a better LSD. I've asked the guy I'm buying the box from to check the rear diff for suretrac markings.

Interesting thing is, I phoned Subaru Technical earlier today and they said I'd have problems with the front shafts, prop, neutral switch position, gearbox mountings (what?) and for the rear diff, rear shafts, hub and brakes.

I really want the rear diff, but only if its suretrac.

Right if you really want the rear diff ( i cant be sure that the current R180's have suretracs in them, but i think the P1s did) then in addition to what i stated above, you will need

R180 rear diff
Rear driveshafts matching to R180 diff
Rear hubs to match with driveshafts
Rear brakes to match with hubs

Wink

Okay m8, thanks for that.

Since I'll not need to buy the fronts, I'll prob go for a rear diff change (subject to suretrac) and pay the extra for the hubs etc.

Question

Sorry m8, one last question....

Re the rear diff R180 fitting, would I need to buy rear calipers too or just the discs?

Just send your standard WRX diff off to Quaife and get them to rebuild it with a ATB, thats what i will be doing when my diff goes pop!!!!!!!!!!

You need to check the gearbox number TYxxxxx to make sure its a 6 speed WITH suretrac. Better option is as Scott says then you dont need the hassle of driveshafts, discs, hubs, calipers etc.

Steven and all,

P1's have an R160 rear diff !!

The reposition of the calipers - even Brembos, can be done by redrilling the backing plates that the calipers bolt to. Not a simple task, but worthwhile given the alternate cost.

Cheers David, was struggling to remember, hence the cant be sure bit. I had been reading something on 22b that i thought suggested they were R180's.

Still not certain the current r180's have suretrac rear diffs

The rear diff on the UK 6 speed is also suretrack rather than agressive plated type found on the v4-6 type R and RA cars.

An easy alternative as scott says is to have a normal R160 uk rear diff rebuilt with a Quaiffe ATB unit, although this may work out as expesive as all the bits.

I would ask David at API about 6 speed and diff options, they are likely to be cheaper than grade A, and David has a lot of experience with selling all the required parts for 6 speed swaps now.

Quaife is fun though
