Vibration when pulling away in 98 Classic?
I bought my first Scooby last week,a 98 turbo wagon and am really happy with it but I am really struggling to pull away smoothly in 1st gear especially when the engine is cold. When the clutch engages I feel quite alot of juddering through the pedal and it sometimes does it when changing down through the gears. The clutch doesnt slip and the car had a new clutch and flywheel fitted by Subaru at a cost of about a grand 10k ago.Could it perhaps be engine mounts or a transmission problem or is it just something they all do?
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Does this only do this from cold? If so sounds like the famous clutch judder, very common on classics and nothing to worry about Oh and welcome on board!

the judder man!
don't worry about it, they all do it at some point! my my99 does it everynow and again when cold and been stood for a while. i just ride the clutch out a bit to make it smoother without shaking the cabin to bits! I think the new ones even do it!

I had a similar problem with a brand new saloon. After replacing the clutch the problem was still there. It turned out to be a faulty plug lead or H.T. lead. Atscuse my memory on this it was 98!

I also have a MY98 with the same clutch judder when cold. Just one of those things, get used to it after a while. I did have the clutch plates cleaned at the last service however and that has reduced the judder a lot.
ps. Welcome, hope your enjoying your new Scoob (you will soon know the location of all your local shell stations very well hehe!)
Cheers

Shell stations!! My god I cannot beleive how much Optimax it drinks I only get about 90 miles out of £20 and thats if I drive it nicely!! But on a more serious note,I absolutely love the car,its like nothing else I have ever driven and I cant imagine ever wanting to own any other type of car after this one.

I had the same problem with my MY00, changed the clutch plate, cover, flywheel and release bearing and it still does it.
I will check my engine mounts and HT leads tonight, though I think it'll just be 'one of those things'

Mine does it when cold but tends to go away after a while. If this is the case with yours either ride the clutch a little or do a couple of aggressive pull offs ( ) should calm it down a bit.

This all makes me feel a little better, thought my car MY99 was unique.
When cold ride it out OK! Same as above. Mmm you would have thought they would have sorted this bug out through the years.!

Looks like I am not alone then! I feel much better now I know so many others do it. I will still get the mounts and leads checked out though, especially the leads because it does splutter a bit for the first mile or so on cold, damp mornings.
Its nice to get some helpful replies as some other forums (non Subaru) dont tend to treat newbies this well
