Question STI V5 Questions

HI All!!

Just a few questions to prep me to be the proud owner of a V5 Type R

What Size Injectors does it have? What power can these produce,

Is the fuel pump different to the WRX? or worth changing?

What is the standard Boost? What can it take safely with the VF28(i think)??

It has got a Unichip at the moment, would it be worth keeping this or going for the ECUTEK tek3 remap?

Power at the moment is 304bhp at 12/13psi. is that about right??

Thanks for all the help

Mark...

What Size Injectors does it have?

440cc/min I believe

What power can these produce?

safe reasoning on 380s used to be 300bhp, people have pushed past that now, I would rather under use them than over use them so 440/380*300 = about 350.

Is the fuel pump different to the WRX? or worth changing?

same as wrx, but there are variations in type. its the first mod I would do - mark @ lateral performance - 020 8420 5444 - useful guy to know, buy a warlboro and possibly an uprated fuel pressure reg to go with it.

What is the standard Boost?

think its about 0.9 bar but its been a LONG time since I was running standard boost so don't quote me on that.

What can it take safely with the VF28(i think)??

up to you what to run, don't think its too efficient much beyond 1.3/4

It has got a Unichip at the moment, would it be worth keeping this or going for the ECUTEK tek3 remap?

unichip used boost control which I was never convinced by. I would much prefer an ecutek, plus i trust the mappers far more.

contact pat on 07803 906141 another useful guy to know.

Power at the moment is 304bhp at 12/13psi. is that about right??

sounds very good to me! for standard boost.

Thanks for all the help

no problem.

think john banks managed in the region of 430bhp. But he was prepared for it to go.

andy f made something serious too.

The main concern was more the tensile loads on the rods rather than the danger of combustion pressures.

Just keep det under control and make sure your fuelling is well taken care of.

if you are considering tinkering and are just starting out. Get hold of the things I mentioned above and get yourself a knocklink. Worth getting hold of a wideband lambda meter if you want to keep an eye out yourself, or just rely on the ones which the mappers use when they are mapping your car.

How does the wideband lambda fit? does it replace the oem. I am going to get knocklink and an AFR(Is this a lambda reading). I was also looking at the SECS monitor, doesnt this give you Knock, boost, lambda etc?
Things to do so far. Fuel pump (warlboro 255ltr) and FSC reg.
Fit the knocklink etc. I am aiming for about 350bhp what else would be needed?

Standard boost target is 15.7 PSI midrange - typically with up to 1 PSI overboost, 14.6 at the top.

I did 406 BHP on UK internals which are the same but with cast instead of forged pistons.

Andy F did 440 BHP on 95 WRX internals with STi 4 pistons.

The forged pistons in STi 5/6 do look really good, I think the rods are more limited by RPM and they already do 8000 RPM.

The main issue I think is picking up the forged piston in the bore and seizing. The piston to bore wall clearance is tight, especially so for forged pistons which expand more than cast.

But 350 BHP is tickling it really if done right.

SECS gives you a read out of what the ECU is seeing as knock, but you really don't need that as the ECU will look after itself if it sees it. What you need is a knocklink to give a visual indication of knock that the ECU may not respond to.

AFR meter is always good just to see that the fuel system and MAF sensor are behaving themselves.

Upgraded 255lph Walbro pump is a good idea, but it can overpower the OEM regulator. I don't like the FSE ones as they tend to just fail and give low pressure without warning - happened twice to me, without wideband AFR and in car fuel pressure gauge I would probably have not known and lost the engine from it going lean.

Wideband lambda could just be used whilst mapping it.

So for 350 BHP I suggest:

TD05-16G turbo
Fuel pump
SX regulator
Keep the standard injectors and drive them at 4 bar with the above, I don't think they mind being wide open.
Knocklink
Boost gauge
Exhaust
Exhaust manifold and uppipe
K&N 57i or APS induction with large filter in the wing
Ecutek or Power FC remap
AVC-R will give nice boost control for a big turbo on a 2.0 with short gearing and real world I've been very impressed by the difference it makes

VF28 is competent to 320 BHP approx.

Thanks John

Ok so for starters

Fuel pump
SX regulator
Knocklink
Boost gauge
Exhaust (Have full Decat)
undecided to which yet. K&N 57, STI, Green, panel filter
I have a Unichip at the mo.
AVC-R

Would this get 320bhp??
