Is This Normal On A UK Wagon
My mate has a standard UK Turbo wagon and have only got a downpipe de-cat, they have changed the turbo for a STi 8 turbo, they were wondering why the turbo only kicks in at 4,000 rpms?

You can't go around swapping bits and pieces like lego - it just doesn't work like that unless it's remapped to suit.
I'm sure you'll get a few replies in the morning with more technical info - but I would tell your mate to take it very easy until it's sorted.....

Am not surprised...
Definately a remap to make any advantage at all.
STi8 turbo is much bigger than the standard TD04, so unless it's mapped, it aint gonna perform that well.

cheers mate, ill let him know btw, still aint got my version 4 type R on the road and ive had it since april stupid model reports blah blah. got no idea how frustrating it is!!!!

Depends on year.. if a MY99 or MY00 then it can have the ecu remapped.
Otherwise replacement likely to be the only option.. as said £700 + depending on which ecu.

Few things:
- where have you tried for model reports? http://www.amplified-performance.co.uk/ claim to have one for the STI 4, I believe. (Maybe not the type R, though, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask).
- Have you just swapped the original ECU for an STI one? I'm surprised the engine even starts, given that the STI unit uses extra sensors. Besides, the STI one will be mapped for a much stronger engine with a bigger turbo. You're playing with fire IMHO - far better to fit the original one and get it remapped to suit your own car. Several places will do it - where are you located?
- A bigger turbo is all well and good, but have you done any supporting mods - intake/exhaust and injectors spring to mind. There's no point in doing the remap if the engine is being strangled.

Andy c,an sti ecu would work on a my99 uk if certain wires are swapped/changed around and AFAIK the only extra sensor is the intake temperature.
ver.4,your mate should take it it very easy with his car ie dont let it come on boost too much,untill he gets a remap.
BRD are good for the tech 3 remap although they are 2 months pre booked,so he will have to wait.He could also try ANDY F,who is based in scotland and is very good with the Apexi PFC ecu.Power enginearing in Uxbridge can do remaps but they wont touch anything with a Jap ecu.
I hope your mate has got a Knock link to make sure hes not getting det in the mean time.
It would probably be better to fit back the orignal ecu and drive it carefully untill the remap,as the sti ecu will not bennefit anything if its going to be reprogrammed anyway,and in any case its probably making things worse as its expecting 100 ron fuel.
The remap will also make more bennefits of the decat and you can add a few more mods before so that you deffinately make the most of your £763.71.

To be honest, I don't know whether the STI ECU could work or not. What I do know, is that:
- the STI engine is different enough that you'd need to remap it anyway, and
- the original ECU can be remapped too, so
- why on earth would you want to use an STI ECU in the first place?
It's not the case that the STI ECU will automatically give you more power just because there's an STI sticker on the box. Your best bet is to talk to a reputable tuner, though, rather than a numpty like me.
