On my MY00 there was always some whine but it got fairly bad without being intusive though. You know it's there and it just niggles. Well the gearbox was remove and the crown & pinion/bearings were worn. Result was a new gearbox at £2700 plus another £700 to buy my old gearbox back as I thought I would have to go to court to get recompense. I had a Dutch import with 1 year's warranty and the gearbox was replaced on the 15th month! I did getpaid after 13 months which involved writing direct to Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan etc. However, the Dutch warranty crowd maintained that the bearings simply needed replacing. Either way it's expensive to diagnose and moreso to repair because of the labour.

Hope this helps.

Had mine done for £670 including parts and labour and an IDL Blueprint Clutch kit.
2 tappered roller bearing where shot.
This price was for 5 hours labour to get the box in/out, 4 hours labour to strip/rebuild, bearings/seals and clutch kit.

The noise was most noticable above 45mph in 4th/5th, but it was there in all gears but due to background noise was less noticable.

If your in the South drop me a PM an I'll point you towards my mechanic (£27.50 per hour labour rate)
