Fluttering boost guage and sound [TD05FE]
I have just noticed that my car is making a fluttering sound in 4th & 5th gear on wot, the boost gauge seems to be fluttering also. Its doesnt seem to effect the performance badly but it does sound strange.
The car is an MY00 uk with TD05FE and Link ecu with 3 port & FMIC. Any ideas what it is?
Cheers
Jake.

Never actually played with one, but I'm guessing their internals are the same/similar to a 2 port. Just initiate diagnostic mode on the ECU (green connectors beneath steering column, ignition on), remove hoses (remembering which goes where), and spray loads of brake cleaner inside. Other people remove the whole unit from the suspension turret so they can get at the bottom of it easier...

What FMIC kit is it?
What sort of induction pipe are you using?
There have been a few people (including myself) with this problem. Although normally at lower revs (mine is 3400-4000).

I am surprised you are getting it that high in the rev range, usually it is caused by running too much boost too low down, long FMIC pipework and large bore inlet pipes make it worse (I have both).
Are you using std headers?
Can you post a PClink log of the problem?

Andrew, I think you could be right it is happening at the lower end of 4k rpm, just difficult to look at the revs/boost doing 100ish in traffic if you know what I mean.
I will go out tonight when there is less traffic and give it good test.
If it is surge can it be cured?

It sounds like surge to me, I have the same issue on my TD05FE. I need to go above 4500 to go to 1.3 bar. Below 4500 RPM I need to keep it down to 1.20-1.25.
That is with 99 Impreza with TD05FE, MRT inlet and K&N induction kit.

Just had my first experience of this today. Ported VF34, standard headers, inlet pipe and TMIC, K&N induction. Have increased the boost to ~1.4bar in 5th. When coming onto boost achieved 1.3bar by 3000rpm then oscillated/fluttered around 1.35bar from 3000-3400rpm. No problem in any other gear as yet (get 1.35bar in 4th around 3200rpm). Think I'll just drive around it, as using Dawes MBC for boost control.

It's with standard TMIC and Samco y-pipe.
In a couple of weeks I can let you know if the Hybrid FMIC solves any of the surge issues :-)
Kindest regards
Rasmus
