Default MY99 Engine Rebuild - Rough Costs

Having had 3 engine replacements under warranty on my UK MY99 Impreza turbo and now that the warranty has run out, I would like to know what the rough prices people out there have paid to large garage services for the rebuild of their engines after a piston meltdown (ie caused by faulty maf as mine was).

It was over £7k from Subaru and included a number of bits. I want to know roughly how much to put aside just incase (I am getting a knock-link and boost gauge in the mean time).

Real example costs, a short list of the most expensive damaged/replaced parts and what you think was the cause of the failure would be useful as Subaru's costs are over the top and they seem to replace everything, whether its damaged or not (good under warranty, not so good if you are paying yourself).

Cheers in advance,

MKC

general feeling on the my99/00 is that the MAF sensor is to be treated as a consumable. replace it every 12 months. it is £77 in vat from your dealer. other than that routine maintenance and keep your fingers crossed. some say induction kits are best avoided (because the MAF just doesn't handle it well). knock link cannot do anyharm. run on optimax or similar. be sensible with any mods.

You could always ask API David, he seems to do good deals on new / refurb / 2nd hand engines when they go pop.

At a guess, £1500 for a full recon /2nd hand engine maybe plus fitting.

Less ancillaries of course.

Thanks for the plug vulnax.

A fully rebuilt, warranted engine for MY99 from us is £1700 plus VAT using only genuine Subaru parts. Fitting if required is £500 and includes ALL consumables.

That's why we're booked solid until the end of the first week of August !! This year of course

No problems David, even though I didn't finally need your services after my oil loss on the moterway ( after Scooby Shootout ) you were very helpful with diagnosis and offers of help. If I do need a new motor I'll be at your door!

Cheers

Thanks.

I intend to have £2500 hanging around to cover any major out of the blue problems which seems to be enough, even though I may have to wait a month to get the work done. Cheers, MKC
