The GEMS web site is pretty good!
Only know of one good mapper, Steve Simpson, I think its www.stevesimpsonmotorsport.co.uk or call www.tegsport.co.uk

I dont know of any decent gems mappers in the uk..

Forgot to say,

Would it be worth having a go at fitting them myself and then just getting them mapped? Trying to save money.

I think Gems have a fiddle at the moment - you can only buy it from Steve Simpson, and have to pay for him to map it. After that, you then have to go & get it remapped by the person who you actually want to map it, so you pay for mapping it twice... or pay for it & then immediatly ditch the mapping you've just paid for. It was enough to put me off buying one - I'm not keen on any company that dictates how the user uses their product!
IMHO, you may as well get it right first time, so go for a Link/MoTeC & get it mapped by who you want instead.

That's good news - hope they can be bought without the mapping though!

Hi

So the Gems is not available without being mapped by steve first? Is it fairly easy to install on the car?
Is it best to be mapped on rollers or road?

Thanks

Surely mapping on the RR is best?
More consistancy, less strain on car and those involved, and where do you blast an Impreza in 5th and aviod the growing plague of Cameras in this fair land?
A friend of mine had a GEMS supplied and fitted by Steve, mapped on road and RR, best result was from RR, 349 bhp with stock Sti V3, water inj, FMIC and high flow pump. Drove realy realy nicely.

Dont see how mapping on a RR can be the best given the significantly high temps compared to on the Road........

Re camera's - well if you have a host of devices...inc laser Jammers then you have not a lot to worry about...........

There's no way to finish mapping on a RR - most can be done there, but it needs to be finalised on the road (at least). Oddly, if you're going to drive it on the road, it should be mapped on the road as it'll behave the same way .
Some years ago, a fair few cars blew because they were mapped only on RR - and then driving on the road, the car reached parts of the map that RRs cannot reach , & boom...

I had Gems fitted by Steve Simpson to my sti V5 & mapped on the road. The guy really knows his game & sets the ecu up so well, I cannot see the reason why you would need anybody else to remap. Also to fit it yourself, you need to be pretty handy with a soldering iron. To fit the wires in for antilag switch & fuel type switch. After that you need to remove the original ecu from its casing & drill a hole in the casing for the lead from the laptop to download the base map into it to start with. He then removes the air temp sensor from the airbox inlet, removes the intercooler & fits another temp sensor into the bottom of it. as the gems system reads the charge air temp instead. Im not trying to put you off, fitting it yourself. only giving you the facts.
But I really do recomend getting Gems, as it totaly transforms the car.

I'm glad you're happy with the map .
The problem is that some of us have preferred mappers (sometimes that includes ourselves), and gems removes the choice of using them - or, at least, we have to pay once for a map that we then ditch and then again for the map that we actually wanted, done either by a 3rd party or by ourselves.
The attitude of gems certainly stopped me from buying one...

Does the Gems give two properly switchable maps - unlike Motec were you can only adjust the ignition advance? and Link doesnt do it..........

Just thinking of NOS......set up, with adjustments to fuelling, boost parameters, not just advance......

Where is Steve Simpson based? - Nottingham?

Me no understand - why can't you just buy the GEMS and get whoever you like to map it (including yourself if you want)?

Just to clarify the commercial position....

GEMS prefer to sell through authorised agents as this provides one point of contact for customers and ensures that the product is mapped by someone who is fully conversant with the software. (I know David will disagree with this, but current figures and a quick look at the top 10 on the Jim Clark rally says it all.....call 07836 635001 if you want to discuss...but I bet you won't!)Anyway...I digress...If you really want to purchase only ECU and install and map yourself then you can do this thru me.
I have shown prices for supply only and full install and mapping.

Supply only: Installed and mapped incl AIT.

4 plug 93-96 £1150 + VAT £1495 + VAT
3 Plug 97/98 £1150 + VAT £1395 + VAT
3 plug 99/00 £1250 + VAT £1595 + VAT
5 plug 01 on £1300 + VAT £1595 + VAT
AIT sensor £23 + VAT
3 Bar MAP sensor £63
GWV3 software and dongle and comms lead :£225 + VAT.

Note 99/00 and 01 0n ECU include ECD controller integral in ECU. All include ALS and alt fuel maps. 99/00 01 on incl launch.

Hope this clears things up...

Steve I dont disagree.. I just cant recommend something I have no experience off!! its a bit frowned opon.. I have first hand experience of bob and pats work though...

ive also never (or never did) recommend John banks.. other than saying he was an option for scottish folk

Now if you want to do some mapping for free then Ill be in a position to mention you

Howard @ HDC subaru speaks highly of you though (but I dont drive a car with a top mount, race fuel or a restrictor.. so I cant really compare his car to mine0

All the best

Darbo, hate you to be ignored!
I found myself to be in the same position as you recently, GEMS, APEXI etc etc.
I have track driven an StiRA v3 with a Simpson mapped Gems, abosolutly fab. So much mid range punch and ultra smooth. High cost though @ £2000 when all done.
Tracked down Andy F more about his turbos, but got onto the ECU side.
As pointed out, Apexi will fuel/time the engine to make max use of the mods to the motor, turbo, exhaust, injectors etc to get the benefit. Gems the same.
Cost is a £650/700 ticket.

Recent magazine articles show evo's at 900+ bhp on Apexi ecu supporting mega mods to the car, I'm sure Gems would do the same.

I have concluded that for my hill climb car a turbo/Apexi combo from AndyF will do me fine, total material/mapping cost about £1600. A thousand more with Gems.

Food for thought. If in doubt, contact AndyF and you will see what I mean.

cheers 911
pity some of the mappers out there dont want to promote themselfs with your Enthusiasm
i dont mind driveing 200 miles if the jobs done properly
was wanting to keep my options open as long as possible
was even considering a emerald system as they are apparently doing a turbo ecu with antilag etc just got to find out if it can fit the scooby

does andyf's apexi setup have antilag option?

cheers

Darbo
