Question possible gearbox problems?

I have noticed today that when in 5th gear, and putting my foot down to accelerate my gearstick moves down about 1/2 and inch and nearly jumps out, (only needs slightest touch to come out) then when i then ease of it moves up again. Also i am having difficulty getting reverse. Could anyone tell me if this is the first signs of the gearbox on it's way out.

Thanks for any help.

James.

No, it is a common problem with My 99/00 boxes. had it on my UK turbo. Take to Scooby dealer, they will fix it in an hour or so.(!)

The 5th gear selector and reverse are 'close' to each other and can be easily adjusted without removing the box, but I think you do have to remove the drop gear casing off the back of the box. That is an ugly job to do at home, easy on a ramp.
As my car then had done only 20K miles the dealer did it under warranty so I saw nothing, just got this explanation.

Guys,

i posted the below in a thread yesterday, this seems the same issue as i have:

i'm currently looking at getting a gearbox rebuild. There is a known problem where a nut becomes loose inside the box and (so im told) stops the oil feed to (in my case) reverse. Its like a whining noise, but only in reverse, it just sounds very dry. I have spoken to SGT (subaru dealer in Twyford) and they showed me a bulletin released by subaru themselves, stating that if this problem occurs, its basicly a rebuild and a new nut supplied. the new nut has 4 locking 'bits' on it instead of 2, hopefully fixing the problem. My car is an MY00 by the way. Price of parts and labour with a SIDC membership (10 % Discount) comes to around £1000! I'm interested to hear anyones views on this though too, ie, is this price to high for whats involved?

Cheers

Christian

edited to say, the bulletin says this problem affects reverse and fifth gear

A reply was that it can simply be tightened, why wasnt i told this by the subaru dealer, instaed i was advised to have a total rebuild. Car has done 45,000 miles with full service history. Can someone please confirm what i should do?

What does it do to affect 5th and reverse?

Im having problems sometimes getting her into reverse, it takes several attempts sometimes, although sometimes it does work first time!

Not too sure of my facts here, but I think the pre facelift boxes, ie before My 97 ,did not have synchro on reverse, so can be awkward to get in.(?)

Jumping-out-of-fifth-gear cost me £300 all in at a Subaru dealer (Quenby's). 3 hours labour plus bits and oil.

Its a MY00 and its not actually jumping out of gear, just hard getting it into gear. Also changing down the gears, when i try to do 2nd to 1st its a bit notchy.

Any more ideas? Im hoping that a change of gearbox oil will help.

Ollie
I've got similar problems with my MY00 Gearbox. It's going in to be looked at next Tueday. I can post back here with a diagnosis at the end of next week if you like. Mine is reluctant to go in gear when cold. Last winter with gearbox cold could not get any gears at all. Reverse is very often a pain when hot or cold.

Post Gearbox fix

Got the gearbox fixed this week. I didn't mention before that I had done a previous oil change and found bits of metal on the drain plug, so I knew something was definately wrong, apart from the problem selecting gears. The bits of metal were from a washer or spacer that is next to third gear and it had broken up inside the box. As this alone might not cause my selection problems the box was completely stripped and rebuilt to be sure it was ok. It's now absolutely fine just like I remember it when it was new.

Ollie, I don't know if your problem is likely to be the same and I don't know where your based but if you give Colin a call on 0777 1767874 he will sort it for you for a very reasonable price. He is based just ouside Reading.
Hope this has been helpfull
Cheers.
Craig.

Talking

Hello
The total bill came to £440, which is £200 to remove and refit the gearbox, the rebuild in my case was £200, but this is dependant on the problem and it was £40 for the new oil. As I said the gearbox is great now its back to being a pleasure to drive.
Stonkin, I replied to your message with Colins details.
Cheers.
Craig.

It seems to have cleared up at the moment. I want to do a fluid change soon anyway so ill take a look for metal bits on the plug when i empty the box.

Cheers for the info though
