Thumbs up Can I reset the ECU on my car?

Alright here's the score J-reg Legacy turbo...Chipped, SS exhaust, Green filter. Always Millers Octane Booster and Optimax

1. Can I reset the ECU?
2. How do I do it?
3. I have a Clifford Alarm will it make it go off and get me lynched by my irritable neighbours?

Please help....thanks

Dont you have to take the battery off for a certain period of time (Dunno how long) and wait for the ecu's memory to be lost then drive it sensibley while it relearns after? I've done it that way on other cars before.

I think theres a more technical way but i wouldn't know

The garanteed method is to disconnect the battery overnight.

What about the alarm going off when I disconnect the battery. Do I disconnect both the negative and positive terminals OR just one...If one which one?

Any one will do mate, but they usually recomend the negative or the both to be sure. A heavy blanket will cover the alarm .

You'll need to disarm the alarm before disconnecting the battery. I wouldn't recommend leaving the car disarmed overnight unless you have it locked away in a garage.

Just disconnect the battery for about 30 mins. I'm pretty sure even 10 minutes is enough for the ECU to reset itself.

What you need to do is warm your car completly then disconect the negative terminal of your battery then press the brake pedal for a few seconds and then reconect the neg terminal.

You put your right leg in, your right leg out, in, out, in, out, shake it all about etc.

Sorry, old English folk song

2 minutes battery disconnection is more than enough, we've literally taken the live terminal off and put it staright back on again when in a hurry.

Thanks for all the advice... I gave it a go on Sunday. It didn't seem to make that much difference. Fill the car with Optimax and a bottle of Octane Booster (Millers). I disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for around 20 mins. Reconnected the battery...the alarm went off reset the alarm then went for a drive. Seemed the same as normal really. Did I do something wrong?

Ah !! Ok I see now. What you mean is, will the computer change its characteristics to adapt to the different fuel now in the tank. The answer is yes, but not so as you'd really notice. The battery reset is usually used to cancel faults on the electronics caused by failur of the MAF, turbo duty valve, idle control valve etc etc.

The ECU takes about 10 minutes of driving / use, to go through all of its sequences, so if you have a continuing fault, the warning light will come back and re-present itself so that you know there is more to do.

Thanks David...I am looking for the reset to get better performance out of the car by resetting the ECU after using Optimax etc. for so long and not having done it before.
