Sowing machine noise from rear...
Import MY02 STI v7 with 13k on the clock. For the last 2k miles I've had a dull thudding noise coming from the rear, consistant with a worn wheel bearing noise.
However, just had the rear wheel bearing changed on the rear nearside and same noise is still there!!! So now I'm £200 lighter.
The noise isn't coming from the off-side, so it's either central or nearside noise. It increases and decreases with road speed and sounds like a sowing machine at greater than 40mph. Mechanic at scoobymania mentioned a possible diff. but couldn't put a definate finger on it even after a road test and ramped inspection.
My questions are:
Does this sound like a diff problem or something else?
Where should I take it for a solid diagnosis and repair?
Will problem become more noticable with another 2000miles on the clock, therefore shall I keep driving it?
Is a new diff an expensive problem?
thanks in advance

No, I recon he means a high pitch wirring sound, didn't you listen to your mum's all those years ago!? Mine was a seamstress, so I grew up with the sound.
I fancy the diff, and maybe the oil level, or maybe the propshaft. If it goes with the car's speed, then it is somthing of fixed gearing.
Because of where you are, and you don't sound like a DIY man, why not take it to the real experts, Roger Clark Motorsport in Hinkley? Ace guys.
A diff rebuild/replacement is not too bad if you use used parts, it takes about 2 to 3 hours to get it out/back in.
Good luck, and I hope it is just your exhaust touching somewhere!

thanks, I'll give them a call to see how much they charge.
Anyone had this type of rebuild done.
My car has the Suretrac LSD front and rear, does this make any difference to the rebuild?
