Question Exactly what effect will a GEMS have on my StiV3?

My Stiv3 is standard engine except for a full Magnex decat system, a green panel filter and a Blitz boost controller. TMIC etc is all stock Subaru. On the rollers it makes 314 bhp @ 1,21 bar on straight Optimax. The car is summer road driven for 3000 miles /year and is seriously hill climbed in competition.

If I change the ecu for a Gems, change nothing else, and get Steve Simpson to map it, what benefits could i expect?
Similarly, if I fit larger injectors and an Andy F turbo, still with the TMIC what might i gain in addition?

Finally, is the Sti v3 ecu compatable with an Sti RA of the same year?

hope Andy F, John Banks and the 'normal' experts will help out here, plus any others!

Specifically from GEMS? - Antilag and launch control (so I believe).

With custom mapping of the fuel and ignition you may get a slight improvement in torque at some RPM levels for the same boost level.

Not much point then John with this level of 'tune'?
TEG said much the same some years ago, but a friend squeezed 350 bhp/328 lbft with this level of engine but with FMIC/Water injection/induction kit/to atmos BOV.
Lot of effort/££££ for 350 bhp?

You havn't said anything about the Gems/AndyF turbo/injectors on this engine!
Thanks for the response, 911

The turbo would be like any other turbo upgrade - you will be trading bottom end/top end balance. For twisty hill climbs it could be wise to keep the turbo quite small?

I agree john. hill climbs need torque and flexibility, not so much as bhp, the ability to pull high rpm and save the gear change helps too.
My friends RA had the stock Sti turbo with the GEMS and the smooth flow of torque was very impressive to drive.
I think i will leave well alone for now and just learn to drive better/faster/with more risk....
Graham.

No, for 2 reasons.
1 It is too load for hill climbing! All the pops and bands are too much for the hills and the country folk around abouts! I'm serious.
2 Loss of power brakes needs a huge vacumm pump to assist the brakes as the inlet vac is lost.

Not worth the hassle.

Not sure about the Antilag. My friends RA(my97) had it big time. Had no brakes as power brake booster has no vacumm to use, so needed a huge pump instead, and the action when done was more a few explosions rather than a series of 'pops' to do the job. He also raced faster without it!
The one realy noticeable effect was the torque mid range and smooth delivery when the turbo came in. the engine peaked very quickly though, maxed out at 6500.

There is also the interest factor of fitting it/mapping and all that.

He may have his GEMS for sale soon, so might get in before you lot do! Ha!
