Default Anyone fancy doing a diy ecu

As above this seems to be an open source ECU !!!

http://www.squirrelpf.com/msavr/index.php?page=MS-AVR

and the manual:

http://members.shaw.ca/megasquirt/manual/mtabcon.htm

Only just found this (looking for a diy knock sensor monitor!)

What do you guys think? Any electronics bods fancy a go?

Seems GBs are frowned on Mike. Look in General.

Lol, read most of your posts in the GB section last night Harvey. Got to say it seems a shame that scoobynet is changing but these things happen.

But back to the ECU, it isn't a group buy, just bringing the existence of an open source ECU and code (if you have the know how you could make it for the costs of components and time). I was just wondering if anyone on here had dabbled with it, thats all!

Regards

Good luck with it Mike. Electronics and ECUs are like black magic to me.

You are right. S/Net is changing and I do not like what I see. Look how many technical posts there are compared to the volume of other stuff that is posted. I need to get my GB sorted but I might just stay on 22b and let this lot wash over my head. Quite a few people interested in the tech forums have already said this to me since S/Net 3 was launched.
A few things come through to me. Spin, own agenda, control, Tony Blair. Profitability at the cost of.....
Anyway the initial proposal for GBs was comprehensively shot down and what we have now could have been put in place without any hassle if it had been thought out first.
Cheers.

Guess you have this info :

Detonation Frequency
The reverberation resonance generated by detonation generally lies in the range between 2 and 12KHz. The following equation can be used to estimate the detonation resonant frequency for a specific engine.

Detonation resonant frequency = 900/(3.14 x cylinder radius )

Where the resonant frequency is measured in Hertz and the cylinder radius in metres.

I work for a company that does medical ultrasonics and we have a variety of types of piezo we use (most as actuators some as sensors) if you have an idea of what you are looking for maybe i could help. Or you going to use a on the market knock sensor?

I've seen that forumla before, yes.

I'm going for a very simple solution using the universal Bosch knock sensor and a quite nice bandpass filter to illuminate some LEDs as per a standard knocklink. The filter was originally designed by Chris Palmer. I double checked the calculations and parameters and drew up some PCB artwork.

It would be nice to have such things as gated acquisition and individual cylinder detection and so on, but I don't need anything that complex juyst yet.

There should be a Nissan Pulsar version too - done as requests for a friend.

I need to get the PCBs drilled and assembled now.

Here's a couple of pics:

The filter passband can be moved by tweaking some of the passive component values...

2.5 bore = 99.5mm ?
2.0 bore = 92mm

2.5 knock frequency: 5.76 kHz
2.0 knock frequency: 6.23 kHz

Will look at the filter specs and see if I need to change anything. Remember that the equation is only an approximation... It shouldn't make much difference, the filter characteristic is just about flat over 5.5 to 7 kHz. However, it wouldn't hurt to move the passband a little.

Could anyone give some more information about the DIY knocksensor? Websites etc.?

Didn't think it would be a problem Paul. However, the perfectionist in me would like to see the passband ****ed down in frequency by 500 Hz...

Timbe - sorry, no website for this knock detector (yet) although there are some things on Autospeed that are an interesting read.

Default Knock sensor

DNB (Dave?)
Are you looking to sell kits or ready made knock detectors? If so do you have an idea of price (also just a PCB and picking list would be fine)
Any idea of when they might be available?

Sorry for all the questions

Take care,

Mike

I've got a test run of 9 PCBs made, and 5 of them are spoken for. (It's taken ages to get them done at work, as we keep getting these real jobs to do!)

You're welcome to have a board. Not sure about costs yet, but it won't be high. I need to drill the holes for the components now and then I can assemble 1 to test it then distribute them, so shouldn't be long at all now.

It should work with the "usual" Bosch sensor that the knock link uses.

Arrrghhhh! They've only made the damn PCBs upside down!

Will make the prototype with the chips on the track side and see if it works while I have a word with the chap who missed the "this side up" sign on the artwork.

DNB,
If you want to mail me the artwork i am sure the boys at work could knock us up a set of boards?

How do you need the artwork? I have an acitate sheet with clear tracks on a black background at the moment. Or would having it emailed as a CAD file (not GERBER, unfortunately ) be sufficient? It would be nice to have some "correct" ones. I could get some more made here, but the time scales are geological.

The backwards ones will at least let me do some testing. They're just a PITA soldering the through hole chips on. At least the passives can go on either side

I got one half assembled last night, but ran out of 10k resistors!

I think so... (That is, assuming you don't mind the ICs being on the board upside down...)

Going into town to get the remaining bits this lunch time so I can assemble one completely tonight.

Had a word with the boys, they said no probs. So if you send the cad data or WHY that will be fine.

Mike - I will get the files for you ASAP.

Here's some pics of the infamous upside down knocklink...

The soldering isn't as bad as it looks! But I do neet to acquire a smaller iron...

I'm about to start testing...

Cool,

Does your kit use a knock sensor interface chip like this?

http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tpic8101.pdf

or something else?

Cheers

Something else - a couple of resistors and an opamp!! (It'll never go obsolete )

I didn't find out about those until a very short time ago, and my project has been on the drawing board for a long time now...

If I do a mark 2, the tpic chip could feature on it, as it saves a fair few components, providing of course that it can be easily obtained in small quantities.

The first testing is done on the prototype now - it works quite nicely with simulated knock from a soundcard

Just what the doctor ordered.

Has there been any further developments?
