MY99 Exhaust Manifold Replacement

MY99 Exhaust Manifold Replacement
My driver's side exhaust manifold seems to have "blown the gasket out" !!
I can just make out a rusty nut holding a rusty iron thing onto the left
hand lower side of the block. There's a 1mm gap between two surfaces which the nut and bolt are holding together. The exhaust seemes to be blowing from this.
My Subaru dealer is giving me a price for sorting it and said that
several things need dismantling to get to it and do the job properly.
Does anyone have any idea how long this should take and how much it should cost ? Is it a usual thing or could it be caused by anything I should watch out for ?
Can I get stainless parts for them to fit instead and what are they called ?
Do they improve flow and performance without replacing top cat ?
Cheers in advance for any info,
MKC

They are generally referred to as headers.
The OEM item is actually in several pieces, I'm not sure which bit you are referring to but it sounds like the header to uppipe gasket which is blowing, if it is then it can be replaced easily by the removal of 1 part of the heatsheld and the 2 nuts and bolts between the the manifold and uppipe.
