lambda sensor
Would the sensor from an MY97 fit striaght on my MY95 WRX and if not how hard would it be to wire up a universal sensor to the current block? Has anyone used one of them?

MY97 should work fine, although the connector may be different.
If it is you can release the pins from the connector shell with a small screwdriver, then insert them into the connector shell for the other sensor.
It is a 4-Pin shell with 3-Pins and one blanked hole. IIRC the 2 silver contacts are white wires and are the heater elecment. The Brass/Gold contact is Black wired and the signal.
Take care to get them the right way round if swapping connectors.
I ran an earlier sensor in my MY00 and to be honest it felt better.
I may try an get another from the breakers as my Universal one is a bit poor when cold (worse then the standard one).

If you use a 4-wire, the extra wire is GND, which you can just run to Chassis or Battery. The 3-Wire grounds through the downpipe
You may also find that the wires have changed colours (the box mine came in had a leaflet detailing the changes)
The OE Sensor is 2-Whites (Heater) and 1-Black (Signal).
It does not matter which way the heater is wired.
Three Wire
Colour Connection
Black - Signal
White - Heater
White - Heater
Four Wire
Colour Connection
Black - Signal
Grey - Earth
White - Heater
White - Heater
You don't want a Titania O2 sensor which uses something like this :
Three Wire
Colour Connection
Black Ref. (out)
Red Ref. (in) & Heater (+)
White Heater (-)

Thats great scott but I have just had a look and the only vacant connector is a round one that has two wires one red and one blue/black? Any idea if this is the one as it has been a while since I removed the old sensor?

I would of thought it would have at least 3, because the Scooby Lambda sensor has an in-built in heater which normally requires 2 wires. Plus the signal wire.
The connector should be under the intercooler on a very short branch of the loom. The connectors I have seen on both MY94 and MY00 are 4-pin, with 1 hole blanked and the 3 available are heater x 2 and signal.
The Signal wire on the ECU side of the conector is normally white with silver bands.
