HELP strange tapping from my engine

i have a my01 wrx and tonight it started tapping from the engine the engine oil light has also come on and i have topped the level back up
the car wants to stall when on idle and the tapping gets worst as you accelerate
anybody know what it is ?????
would it be my pistons

Loony Toon Unfortunately this has all the hallmarks of a crank failure. I don't recommend that you start it again until someone technically minded has listened to it and given an opinion. We can help of course but it does depend where you are in the country.

Strangely enough Dave, I suggested that Tony call you today.
I had a listen to the car and it give a large knock at start up and then quites down at tickover.
It also seen to have dumped a lot of oil vapour out of the VTA dump valve.
Big end was my first through, but I was wondering if pistons are known to be week on these 01 cars?

You were the one who told us where to get the Red crinckle paint.

I was also looking at a P1 indicator switch a while back, but it wouldnt fit my type R. ;(
