Question Boost restrictor for ECUTEK MY03?

I am currently running a full decat turboback exhaust for MY03 WRX.
I have recently had a 280bhp Tek 2 done at Power enginerring who also adviced me to change the original uppipe in order to be able to obtain the above power figure.

They also insisted that I change a small boost restrictor (which they provided with the ECUTEK) in one of the vacuum pipes around the BOV together with changing the uppipe. Apparently that is something specific to the MY03 WRXs.

Is this a common procedure and can anyone with a reasonable technical knowledge explain to me why is this necessary?

Thanks in advance

The MY03 cars use a different sized restrictor (1.1mm instead of 1.2mm). It takes considerable time to redo the boost control maps to take account of the different restrictor, a swap of the restrictor is much easier I do the same on MY03-> WRX's.

Thanks that makes sense. Another question, today I fitted the TEK2 ECU but have not yet changed the restrictor and the decat uppipe and cannot really distinguish between the low and high boost maps ( activated by the rear window defogger). Car goes better than before but hesitates in the high rev band and does not seem to be near the 280 bhp mark. True the guys at PE told me that with the stock uppipe in place I would not be able to enjoy the higher boost setting.

Could that really be because the stock uppipe is restricting the turbo boost or do I seem to be experiencing some sort of problems with the ECUTEK?

Fit the restrictor ASAP! Without out it you'll be overboosting wildly - very dangerous

The up-pipe cat should also be removed to free up breathing.

I think you've answered your own question there, my friend...!

changed the uppipe and the new restrictor today. The uppipe took forever cause I kept getting leaks. When the job was finally done the difference was unbelieveable. All hesitation is gone. Car bulls to the red line like a bike now. The difference between the two boost settings is obvious now.

If anyone is looking to fit their own uppipe DIY style, pls download the Perrin instructions from the web. They are very detailed and foolproof.
