Default Stock gearbox, Enough torque to break it...

Hi Everybody:

It's time to go for more power to my scooby, so I got a TD05 and some fuel stuff, but I know a little how to increase the power of the engine within some reliable limits, but there is a topic who is scaring me. It's known the Impreza gearbox is weak when the engine have over 300 lb/ft of torque, so I'd like to know some experience about that, things like

- Do's and Don't Do's when you have the stock gearbox and enough torque to break it. (What about Stand starts?, by example)
- What kind of maintenaince is neccesary to keep it working well?
- Are any options to replace only the mainshaft, 1st and 2nd gears?, the most prune to fail.
- I heard something about a cryogenic treatment: http://www.300below.com/, is really worthy (I thing a cheap option)

Any idea could be useful.

Regards

the cheapest way to do the gear box stronger is to fit sti ra gear set. have a lock to www.rallispec.com.
the best maintenance is to change oil often, and use full syntetic, as yacco bvx 1000.

Any idea about How much torque the RA gear box supports?

Thanks

don't agree with jlanng
ra gear set is cryogenic treated and pinions 1.2.3 are thicker than o.e.
about 15% stronger

I thought the STi and RA gearboxes were the same except ratios? Obviously shorter ratios are less likely go bang because there's less resistance

Exclamation Gearbox problems

My Gearbox bearings have just gone on my 59kmiles UK MY98 which has just recently been running just over 300BHP and 290lbf. Looked at using the bearings from an STi only to find out they are the same throughout the range. Just hoping it was wear and tear rather than the increased power that caused them to go.
