Mine did this once, not done it since! Filled the tank right to the brim, gauge never went past Half. Ran the tank down, and when it got to halfish full, the needle went down as normal

Reckon, it just must have 'stuck' a little on the float/sender

i had the same problem on my95,the gauge can drop a bit if knocked when the clocks are being played with.:O
i filled the tank then took the clock fascia off and moved the needle on the gauge to read full, then refitted fascia
it works now

cheers guys will try braking, i always fill it to the very brim when i fill up anyway that never really made it any better.
i will take the fascia off though when filled and remove needle and replace see if that sorts it.

The guage is operated by a float in the fuel tank housed on the same bracket that hold the fuel pump. It is possible that your float is sticking.
There is an access hatch on the drivers side just behind the rear passanger seat and through this you will get access to the float and pump hatch. 8 no. 6mm nuts from memory. You can then inspect the float for fouling, some obstruction or even a holed float.
Your problem may cure itself after the tank has been run to nearly empty and filled up a couple of times but if it still persists I suggest you inspect the float before you do anything else.

Agree with Harvey.. also I think there is a float in the otherside of the tank.. under the other cover.. the tank had a bulge in the bottom to get over the diff and so the two floats are halved etc.. remove inspection (four screws on each) panels and check they are both plugged in properly if still not working then have a look at the floats/mechinism.

Yep. Under no circumstances should you remove the instrument panel and muck about with the needle. That, if anything, is only likely to confuse the situation still further. As the others say, the problem is 99% certain to be at the tank end, and that's where you'll cure it.

BTW, who's this Ralph Nadder bloke Harvey? Did you mean Ralph Nader?
