Any tips on fitting a set of spark plugs
#1
Looking to fit a new set of plugs to a 95 WRX
any idea on what tools to use and the easiest way to get access to the plugs, from above or from below, also can anyone recommend a particular brand, in the past I have always used NGK plugs without any problems.
Interestingly I priced the platinum NGK's at Halfords at Gateshead £13:00 each same plug at a local factors £5:00 each, come on halfords talk about taking your eyes out.

Momo,
I'd be very surprised if the locla factors quoted you for the right plug. I fitted a new set of NGK Platinum tipped plugs 3 months ago for £58, they aren't cheap.
The only way your going to get to your plugs is to remove the Battery & Screen wash bottle on one side and on the other side you'll have to remove the Airbox. It's quite a tight fit down there as well, when you undo the coil packs I'd recommend that you label them up so you put them back in the right place.
I used a Spark plug socket & Spark Plug tool with swivel neck.
Have fun, next time I'll get the garage to do it. Grazed knuckles galore.
O.M.

Thanks for the advice on tools and access I will give it a go in the next few days.
Just to confirm the price on the NGK'S from
the local factor company was for the platinum tipped exactly the same part number as Halfords quoted, the local factors are an NGK outlet they are also a main agent for Hella, my previous car was 16v MK II Golf after cracking a headlight the local dealer quoted £105 for a replacement this company sold me exactly the same unit for £40, it just proves it pays to shop around.

Sorry to hijack the tread, but I am about to do my plugs on the bank holiday weekend (plenty of time ).
I have bought some Bosch platinum core/tip plugs from the local parts place.
Has any body used these Bosch plugs and is there any reason that I shouldn’t?
They were £7.50 per plug so not cheap, but not as pricey as some.
Anyone got any thoughts
Cheers

I have supplied a number of people with DENSO Platinum dual tip plugs for £42 (set of 4)incl P&P (recorded delivery). I wouldn't use anything else, besides DENSO actually make the plugs for a number of aftermarket tuning companies (HKS for example)
Mail me if you are interested.

I use Bosch platinums rather than the NGK the only reason for this is , my local motor factor only had 3 NGK in stock , so I put the Bosch in , there doesn't seem to be any difference in starting, running or fuel economy but I only paid £4.11 per plug including the VAT apparently the only downside to the BOSCH items is they don't last as long as the NGK but as I change my plugs every 15k miles this isn't a problem especially at that price . Changing the plugs now only takes me approx 25 - 30 mins and when I do it I remove the air box completely and undo the washer bottle and swing it up over the Battery out of the way , one useful hint , do the job when the engine is cold so you don't burn your hands , the tools you need , 1x 12mm ring spanner (to remove the coil packs) 1 x 3/8 drive ratchet and small ext bar , 8mm socket for air box lid , 12mm socket (for airbox bottom) and a 16mm plug socket , but take the rubber insert out of the plug socket or you will find that when you come to remove it after fitting the plug the socket will stay on the plug and is an absolute a**e to try and get out .
Cheers and good luck (its always fun the first time fnarr fnarr)

Thanks for the replies guys
I will give the Bosch plugs a try, and see how they go – especially as I paid over the odds for them.
BRM - you don’t happen to have the part No. of the plugs you fitted do you?
Cheers
