Cool

hi there

for those of you who are interested.
The car was put on a rolling road dyno to check the effect of the new intercooler at starperfromance three runs were done with the new intercooler and they all produced very close figures between 219-224bhp at the wheels, power at the fly wheel varied from 310bhp-300bhp same with the torque. The inlet air temperature did not go above 40C at the throttle body on full boost at 6300rpm. which is very impressive, the normal subaru top mounted intercooler will be showing >65C normally if not more depending on the turbo and the boost used.

graphs were produced and you can find them on my website, intercooler section.

Hi Sam,

Congratulations m8. Thanks for posting the information for us.

That's big power and mega torque over a wide rev range too. Very impressive results. Well IMHO a FMIC and larger turbo mapped correctly is a huge improvement to a scoob and mods well worth doing. I'll be doing these mods, that's for sure

Enjoy your car Sam. I wish you the best of luck.

Regards,
WREXY.

glad you liked it wrexy the map is not completely finished yet though, i feel there is more to come . i am waiting for my lap top as we speak and this should make things a lot easier to data log to perfect the map.

i take that not that many people have tried it with samco and Stainless steel pipe work to know the difference ? the pipe work expands under throttle movements, i suppose that will be normal to all intercoolers without S/S piping ?

Sam, Sounds very good, but why start with a UK model why not a 280BHP STi as a starting platform?

Just wondering really.

hi trev

you have got a good point. however when i bought my car i never thought that i was going to go that far . there is not really that much difference between stis and UK cars, they are are just a de tuned version for the UK fuel. the only significant differences engine wise are the heads and the pistons.

UK car also have their advantages, better motor way geariing, i still get my car serviced at the dealer at this state of tune. i even get a courtsy car

Adam
since you didn't bother to look. it was 192bhp at the wheels with 278bhp/280lbf-ft.

What about the closed deck thingy? Or is that not an advantage?

If I'm barking, feel free to tell me.

nick, few stis have a closed deck block, so it isnt right to include this in a list which distinguishes the sti from the uk cars.

Sam,

They are great figures.

I like the STi~UK comparison "just the heads/cams, pistons, metal head gaskets, and turbo", Oh and don't forget the FMIC, and re-map

But you're right, they are very similar. It's a shame that it's so hard to get a 50% increase in power out of an STI, because 420bhp sounds pretty good to me.

I think I need to talk to Adam about this 2.5lt thingy he keeps mentioning, or sell the house and get the Jun conversion......

Mark/Adam

How much money are we actually talking about to get a 2.5l pukka conversion

Perhaps I should just buy a faster car in the first place? - but then that would take the fun out of it.

My life would be devoid if I didnt waste half of it waiting for things to be done to the car! (joking!)

Could we please remember that Nito broke the 300BHP figure in a UK car some time ago.

Dont be a spoilsport

I know of someone who had over 300bhp on a UK car as well, without fmic - running very high boost! - very risky - this was 2 years back

Nito did break the 300hp barrier sometime back - but the difference between his turbo and a VF23 is immense.........

thank you craig for explaining the turbo size issue.
Danny you know your self that the bigger the turbo the more power you will get. however the more air a turbo is going to push the more lag you will get. physics i have elected to go with the small VF23 which is probably the most suitable for a car with long gearing ( ie UK cars) this would sacrifice some bhp potential at the top end but will give you a lot more low end power that you would normally get with the bigger turbo.
nito's car is very good and it is his car the gave me the reason to do go ahead and do it. however my car takes this one step further and shows that with the car properly mapped you can achieve so much more. i have got a huge amount of torque from very low down. around 270 at around 3200rpm or something and then it goes up to 300around 3600rpm and it stays there all the way to 6000rpm.

but what i am interested in is what steve has said, what if an sti had the same mods as mine running 1.5 bar ( probably with bigger turbo as a bouns )would did it have broken the 360-370 bhp/torque

Sam,

Without wanting to go through the whole "Rolling Road x is not RR y" debate ... is there any chance that you could have your car measured at Powerstation ?

I'm not trying to be nasty or clever ... I wanted to go to PE to have a quick run, but time was too short to actually do that.

My run details will be on the dyno pages shortly (at Powerstation), and it would be fun to compare cars on the same RR, because we both have quite similar mods apart from the Unichip/Link.

Again, it's not a "mine is bigger than yours" argument, if you take it that way, please ignore my post. I detailed in another post that JF made me look like an *** in his 2.0 NA Sport, so I know that it's all just pub talk.

It's just that I feel we are sometimes comparing apples with oranges due to the difference in RR output.

Hope this somehow makes sense

Sam/Theo,

I'm going to PE for a RR run at the end of August which will be interesting as I got 271bhp on PS rollers although I cannot remember the torque figures.

you are probably quicker to drive to PS OR PE than me we are talking 500miles plus here.

what is useful though, is that i am going to a rolling road day on the 12th of august. with the MLR club so there should be a big range of evo's and scoobies at various levels of tune. so that will give a better impression if the road reads high as of the PE RR or LOW as the PS RR. a friend of mine went on yesterday. EVO 6, Motec,ALS etc..running 1.5-1.6bar the car put down 237at the wheels, 316bhp/320torque. so the rolling road is not renouned to over read. on the ( private )road flooring it from 30mph we are side by side until we reach 110mph ( well as soon as i get into 5th gear it is kind of game over )then he pulls away about car length or two but that is it.

what intercooler have you gone for ?

Rob
my friend, ?

EvilBevel

I will be taking my car to PS once I've had the fmic done....

My car produced a paltry 277hp and 262lbs at PS.

What I will have to try is a before and after. As since that time I have a VF22 Hybrid (previously a 'basic' VF22), I've had a bit more ignition advance tuned in and have binned the BPM catted exhaust for a free flow job - so would not be fair to get a like for like.

I may get all this done prior to the PS run in October - but if I dont get at least 300hp then the car gets sold! (that would equate to about 340hp at Powerengineering?) - I may also have had the headers ported by then?

We'll see!
