Question

My Local Subaru Dealer uses Semi-Synthetic 10w40 (Shell helix - I think). They do dot offer fully synthetic Mobil 1 5W40 (Which I believe Mobil produce exclusively for Subaru) and Subaru do not recommend Mobil 1 0W-40 or Mobil MotorSport 15W-50

I read somewhere that fully synthetic 10W-50 is they way to go - What brands and viscositites do you recommend?

I welcome your thoughts & comments.

Hi Chris,

My local dealer used Shell Helix Semi Synthetic for running in (10w40) and in the last service used Shell Fully Synthetic 5w30.

I am due to get the oil changed again soon and I am also wondering about other oils. I have heard that Silkolene ProS 10w60 is supposed to be very good.

Also very confused......

Subaru recommend the Shell Helix 10W40 Semi Synthetic. I would say use that or an equivalent/better spec oil. Stick with 10W40 tho as this is whats recommended, and works out quite a bit cheaper.

Curious to hear from a real oil expert tho.

The Subaru recommendation is because they have co-operation (I suppose) with Shell, as Nissan has with Mobil etc.
I used to have 5-50 Aral, a friend told me 10-60 Castrol RS is better for our haute climate.
I thought 5-50 viscosity was excessive (as a Subaru group N driver told me) even for Greece, now I am completely confused !
Any oil expert hear?

Hi Jim,

The Subaru dealer here in Argos uses the Castrol RS 10/60. The dealer is also a Rally driver. He reckons it's the safest for Greece. In Athens they use another brand can't remember which one, but again 10/60. They say for our climate this is needed. I know in Japan because of their hot climate they also use the Castrol RS 10/60. I also use it and will not use anything else. Very expensive but I feel safer with this oil.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
WREXY.

Thanks for the offer Jim I will come there one day as I haven't been to Thessaloniki yet, same goes for you too if you come to Nafplio. It might be a good idea for you to come here for the Knocklink too. Good excuse.

Harj that is cheap. We pay 42 GBP here just for the 4 litres of oil. But still worth it.

Actually Marks question or Harjes answer would be of interest to the bearing thread also.
