I finally plucked up the courage to side step the clutch recently (came about as I was in the wrong lane at a roundabout )

Gritted my teeth that the gearbox would not **** it'self and I left the lights in a cloud of smoke..

Sounds good, only trouble is it was clutch smoke....

I would have thought the uprated clutch would have "bedded in" by now, but before I go off half cocked, I would like some advise on launching this 4wd thing I have bought and modified. (my first 4wd sports car, excluding my v6 landy.. )

I have tried a couple of times since and have yet to get it right.
It either bogs down or smokes the clutch, there seems to be no middle ground.

Your thoughts.
please dont say the word paddle.

definitely NO to paddle!

my mehtod is thus:

build revs to 5.5 - 6 k.

load the clutch juuuust so it bites, do not not just drop it - this is a gearbox caner. impreza 'boxes are known to be the weak link.

i hold the car with the handbrake, amber comes up, release handbrake and clutch in one fluid motion, reaching for second as first gear is gone in a flash.

you may find that the clutch will smell a bit, depends on how well you judged it.

by and large you can get away with no smell with a bit of practice.

remember this is hard on your clutch.

i do it a couple of times a week i guess, either through necessatie as you describe - or just to please my already warped mind!
