Pinking Noise
help please
i just been out driving around keeping everything nicely running after being parked up for bit and when i boot it up to 5500 - 6000 i get a pinking type noise but ok when idling etc.. oil pressure and boost all look ok .
so can anyone help or has anyone else had this problem that could shed some light before i have book it in at the dealers which now is very long away .
by the way it is my99
cheers neil

If it's pinking you're hearing, get it to the dealer ASAP...at low revs and light load!
How long have you been driving with the noise? I'd suspect any sustanined (ie; 30 seconds) pinking while on boost would cause an engine failure. Perhaps it's not pinking - but better to be safe.

Neil,
Pinking or detonation is usually due to one of these things:
* Fuel octane (are you using 95 or 97 ?)
* Inlet temperature (high I would suspect - warm weather and recently parked)
* Engine temperature - ditto
* Boost level ?
How does that fit the situation ?
Thanks
Gavin

richard :- it only happens at high revs and best to my knowlage peater out around 6000 and a bit
gavin :- i always use 95, i don't use the car very much i got a company one you see so i try and keep everything ticking over may be the warm weather it only happens when warmed up, engine temp is normal boost level peaks at 0.8/0.9 bar
i have tried the usaly things like brake pipes etc... what does anyone think could it be the soliniod clicking ???

If it's pinking it's very dangerous at those revs (assuming you're on boost as well).
It *maybe* that you can hear the boost solenoid ascilating (it scared the hell out of me when I first removed the resonator
).
If you're brave you could try a tank of 97 and see if you've still got the problem....course, if it *is* detonation then you're only one full boost run away from a wrecked engine....I'd get it professionally checked...either dealer or someone with det-cans and the knowledge to use them.

Are we talking a uk car or a jap import here??
If its a uk car then the dealer is the best place for it, a jap car and i would reccommend super ul (even on a uk car) and octane booster.
But get it checked out, engines are expensive

looks like i'm going have book it in yet again if this is another engine swap out i will not be pleased i had the engine replaced just before christmas for oil problems ( level too low ) i had a my95 uk car from two and half year and no problems and thought a trade up to a my99 uk would be a good move i think not !!! i think this will be my last scooby too many big problems and very little dealers too take them too in the north west close to where i live.
