Ticking noise near air box

Sorry for seeming thick but I'm by no way near a techy when it comes to engines.
My MY97 Impreza turbo has developed a loud ticking noise at about 1200 rpm and it seems to be coming from a small cylindrical part just behind the air box. Someone has said to me it's something to do with regulating the turbo.
Is this normal?
Should I get the part replaced under my dealer warranty?
I'd be grateful if anyone could help.
