If you alter the mass of the rod i.e.make it heavier, it might stop rattling at that frequency. Try cliping a peg on the rod to see if it works, if it does then do a more permanent job with something less "agricultural"?

Question

I have a WRX which has developed a very annoying rattle when cold at tickover.
I removed the heat shield but it wasn’t that, it’s the wastegate arm. The metal arm of the wastegate which connects to the solenoid. If I rest my finger on the top of the wastegate arm the rattle stops and there seems to be a very small amount of play in the arm but not enough for any gasses to escape from the joint.

It just buzzes and rattles and really spoils the sound of the car, so I need a way to fix it.
Has anybody had this problem and if so would giving the turbo a good clean sort it. Or does it need to be overhauled by a specialist.

Any help would be great

Cheers

Hi Yee,
Is the rattle because of wear at the wastegate arm linkage or at the solenoid end of the arm? Maybe the clevis could be replaced or rebushed. I may be able to help with a clevis as we have loads of turbo's where I work , or I can give you the name of a toolmaker / machine shop fairly close to you that I trust.

Regards,
John

John
The ware is at the wastegate arm which comes out of the turbo and not in the linkage to the solenoid.
I’m just round the corner from you (Stockton) so I could pop over if you needed to take a better look, and I could get more of an expert opinion.

Mail me off line to let me know.
