how do you know you're getting flames?

Have recently put a full scoobysport exhaust on my my00+ppp and always get pops on overrun (very nice in traffic when engine braking in 2nd 
)
I've noticed a few people back off suddenly when driving behind me, but other than that have no idea if I get flames out the exhaust.
Other than getting someone to stand at the edge of the road, are there any tell tale signs? melted paintwork, etc?

Go for a run in complete darkness (no street lights etc) and keep an eye on your passenger wing mirror.
I had a faulty solenoid that prevented boost above 0.6 bar.
The car would have been over fueling quite badly hence flames on gearcange.

Tie a sausage to a piece of string and tie one end to your spoiler so the sausage hangs over the end of the exhaust. Go for a drive. When you get back get the status of the sausage. If its cooked you are getting flames (and get a snack), if not you aren't!
If you want to know how big the flames are use a piece of steak instead and check the level of cooking when you get back.
Rare = small flames
Well done = huge flames Etc
