Does anybody know what the legal Decibel reading is for a road car exhaust.

I`m a bit concerned with the loudness of my new back box. Its reading 104db at 1.5 meters at 4000rpm.

I know that this is illegal on many tracks, but does anybody know what the law states for road cars?

Paul

Pardon..did somebody say something

Hi yer Paul,
Just to concur, I have tried to investigate the numbers you require, but have only so far obtained the following for tracks:

STATIC TEST: 101dB(A) @ 4500rpm from Tailpipe

DRIVE BY: 87dB(A) @ Full throttle, 20m from centre line of the vehicle passing at least 60mph and accelerating to the max.

I will try and dig further for the road levels, but I believe that this figure is 74dB(A) total Drive by !

Cheers Jacko.

Don't know if this is relevant but here are the health and safety regulations regarding noise from a course I recently done .
At 85 dB ear protection is recommended , at 90 dB it is compulsary in the workplace .
The maximium allowable exposure time is 8 hours at 90 dB .
Every 3 dB increase halves the length of exposure before hearing damage occurs .
So at 104 dB max exposure time is 20 mins .

At rally scrutineering the limit is 100db@ 4500rpm. I think the distance is 1 meter and the measuring device is held at a 45 degree angle pointing downwards to the tailpipe.

For the SVA test it is 101dB at 1 meter (up, out and back).

I got a noise meter a couple of weeks ago as we were trying to get a twin bike-engined car through SVA (this was _quite_ loud!)

My car was tested at Bedford on Friday.

at 0.5m 4500rpm, it was 86dB.

That's with a full system.

A P1 and 22B, both with the full system were similar readings.
