Question

Hi all. I thought this side of the pond would be able to answer my WRX intercooler questions better than the US side.

I have a small 5 psi turbo kit of my Impreza 2.5 RS and I am looking to add an Intercooler. I have found a place that claims to sell used WRX IC's for a very reasonable price in California. I had a few questions before I considered buying one though.

Are the WRX IC's plumbed for a Blow-Off-Valve from the factory? If not, where is the common location for your BOVs?

Are there any years of IC's that are viewed as better than the others? Any design changes that would make one year a better choice? How would one tell which version of IC they are getting?

Does anyone have the inlet, outlet diameters, and the overall dimensions of the WRX IC?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for your time,

Aaron

It appears what we Yanks call Blow Off Valves are called dump valves on your side of the pond, so substitute accordingly in my prior message.

The things I am learning on your board

Aaron,

I have a used UK Turbo spec intercooler for sale it is from my MY00 car which now has a front mount intercooler. It also has fitted Prodrive performance pack ducting and you are welcome to make me an offer for it. However I do live in the Caribbean and so they would be some freight charges involved.

E-mail if interested.

Christian,

You don't seem to have your email address listed. Feel free to email me with your asking price including shipping to the Phoenix, Arizona Zip Code 85027 and we will see how that works out. Thanks for the offer

My email address is abrown17@uswest.net

Aaron

So Aaron,

Does the place in CA sell the pre-'97 WRX intercoolers (that fit) or are you planning on getting a later intercooler and taking a sledgehammer to the firewall ala Paul Eklund?

I'm in the market for an old-style small, "diagonal" WRX intercooler myself.

The BOV/dump valve is attached to the OE intercooler.

5 psi seems a very low pressure turbo!

Good ole Paul. I would preferably get an IC that fits. Which is part of the reason I am posting here. I am trying to gather as much info as possible before I order one. BTW the place in CA sells Air/Water ICs not the WRX ICs I thought they were selling.

5psi is a small turbo kit, but it has been enough to get me a 13.91 time in the 1/4 mile. Having an extra .5 litres helps With the IC I am hoping to run around 7 psi.

Thanks all!

Question

So, what do owners of "early" WRXs/Turbos do when they upgrade the intercooler? Are there aftermarket intercoolers available that fit the smaller space available?

I have a 94 WRX so I looked around a lot for an upgraded intercooler. Two better quality I/C's which will fit in the standard space are at:

Thanks Gavin, I'll check those out. I'm probably better off just getting a salvage intercooler than spending $700+
