"Long Life" Oil
#1
That's what I thought -- seems to be more of a marketing exercise like "this car's really cheap to run" than a genuine service policy. And like you say, 0W30 is a bit thin for high-stress work. Hmmm.

My bro-in-law has an Audi TT 225. It uses "variable service intervals" of between 12,000 and 18,000 miles, according to driving style etc -- the ECU monitors all that stuff and works out when it needs a service. However, Audi specify using "long life" oil, and states that Esso Ultron 0W30 and Castrol SLX 0W30 are approved under this category, and must be used otherwise the "variable service intervals" are invalidated.
Seems to me that 18,000 miles is a long way between oil changes, especially for a motor like the 225 which is pretty highly tuned. Can't imagine any oil lasting that long ... what do you guys reckon?

Personally speaking I wouldn't let any car of mine go 18000 miles between oil changes (especially a turbo motor). I suppose if you drive like a complete wuss and never bring it on boost (what's the point in having it then?), then maybe you would be alright. I wouldn't risk it though.

Isnt 0w30 a bit thin for use with a turbo charged car??? definately too long between services for the oil will be totally knackered by then and with no warning of running down the engine on audi's after a long run it seems this should send a few of them to an early grave oh well, suppose if you can afford an audi then you can afford a new turbo for it

My Swiss Subaru dealer offered me the same thing. When I was in asking for an early oil change at 6km (rather than the *excessive* 12.5k in the book!)......I politely declined.
