Advise on timing belt replacement please
#1
My cars in for a front crank oil seal replacement on tuesday, Should I replace the timing belt at the same time as it has to come off anyway? the belt has been on the car for just 11,000 miles.Someone(not the garage doing the repair) has told me that if you take one off and refit, it will be knackered due to it being re-tensioned. Sounds like crap to me but could it be correct?

Hi there,
In theory you can re-use the belt....
But I never do. A new belt everytime it is taken off... just habbit
The tensior excuse is pants...crap.. heehee
I assume a subie dealer is doing the work ?
The tensior must be compressed very slowly - over a period of minutes...
Also check all the pulleys/idler wheels.. make sure the bearings are ok.
If a subie dealer isnt doing the work, let me know.. I can save u about 20-30 quid on the price of the timing belt

Not saying you should not ... but belt is only replaced every 45000 miles ... normal cost £99 plus vat, pays your money as they say, when my crank seal was done the belt was refitted and looked in perfect condition. No problems to the 45000 change.
