Dead Gearbox after 35000!

All,
Just posting to find out if any one else with one of the late Mk1 Scoobs has had any gearbox problems. Had a wine begin last week from the box above 40mph, always there just the pitch and volume changed with speed. Took the car to Gibsons who have said that its probably one of the geardbx bearings on the output shaft. 2 Day job to put right ! Ouch
And I thought these damn things were bullet proof, prehaps I should have bought the A4 instead.

Had worse a new age car with a shade of 10k on the clock, all gears & synchros mashed & rear diff........Of course, it was driven like a rally car.....
Though 35k does seem a little early if you are light on the gears, if you are somewhat heavier then its about the right time to go.....

X rally car.... nope not unless the gear box has been swapped out, as for hard on the box nope not yet, It hasnt even been near a track day yet! Im just resigned to the fact that scooby ownership is expensive. All this does is delay the Power Engineering Stage 1 upgrade for a few more months !

As many people have said before these gearboxes are soft, mine started giving real trouble (4th gear synchro) at about 10,000 miles, just outside the 1 year Warranty (Import), wrote to Subaru about it, and they didn't want to know, similar response to the continuing clutch judder, I'm afraid there just not that well made...I won't buy another !

Chaddy, Thanks for that ! Just what I wanted to hear.
The bad news is that whilst stripping it all down they've identified the friction plates b*ggered (no surprise) but also the pressure plates 'blueing' and theyve recommended thats changed, but it would explain the clutch judder if the pressure plates lost some of its strength. So in parts Im up to 220 + VAT already and they aint opened the box up yet.
Boo hooo I could really go off this car.

Life gets even bleeding worse. Should have had the car back today, but some how some one has ordered the wrong bearings.... doh! So now Im not getting it till Wednesday.
Then to add insult to injury the cars been left OUTSIDE over the weekend and been broken in to!
Rumor has it that there's a new Scooby dealership opening in Preston may have to consider this next time. Unless anyone knows a good specialist in the area.

£220 + Vat, i take it thats for a clutch, you can get the Borg and Beck clutch complete for £78 delivered, its excellent quality and can handle 250-300 BHP.
Dont just cough up as they have got the car in bits, source the parts yourself.

Thanks for that one zippy, In the end the clutch hasnt changed 'a bit of a mixup in the workshop' so my clutch is OK for a bit longer so 220+VAT saved although having all the main bearings in the box changed has cost me a fortune... there goes the Power Engineering upgrade for another 6 months! After all the hastle its good to have the csr back and playing again and theyve done a good job if a little expensive! Got one of the bearings as well, talk about rough! Gearbox pople said they were all buggered but no obvious cause, poss the box has been run low on oil some time in its previous life.. will never no though !
