getting old and need to make a new quiet exhaust.. any ideas for design or suppliers of silencers.. .NOT A SYSTEM!

Probably worth looking at the US market, loads of manufacturers used to supplying mufflers for high hp engines while keeping 48-state legal. You could probably find some high flow cats too, if you wanted.

Take a look at the Flowmaster site

I've also asked a mate who builds/restores/customises muscle cars who he uses, he might come up with someone better

There was a silencer test on autospeed, flow and noise tested, do a search.

Jetex do universal silencers and bends

You could give www.raceco.com a try - they are well respected on Caterhams, and they do lots of silencers for bikes and other cars as well. Not cheap though!

David, there is company in Halifax called Pipercraft, they will make silencers to your size, spec and noise requirement in SS. Very neat jobs and not too expensive either.

I use a short 3" Jetex box on my car, it's still a bit loud but you could fit the longer 3" or fit 2 of them ? They maintain a full 3" throughout unlike some silencers.

im getting old..

I want something very quiet now..

Id like to try and make a backbox that looks oem too..

Ps.. stainless steel isnt an issue, I actually think stainless makes it louder / changes the note?

wastegate will also get plumbed back in :O

Why not try power engineering? I have thier back box on mine with the twin 3" pipes which look like OEM and not too loud either plus the pipe is 3" as well.

My mate got back to me. He says he uses Dynomax mufflers that he gets from Summit Racing (www.summitracing.com). He currently runs a 56 Chevy with about 600hp and runs the headers straight into the mufflers as a side exit and it's pretty quiet and flows very well.

I have got the Power Engineering back box as well and I think it flows very well going by the improvement overall when I fitted the Turbo back system. As the other chap said, it has a deep but pleasant note and is not too loud. It is well known around here and I have even had elderly ladies says that they enjoy hearing it!

Hi David -
Probably not quite up to what you want, but Ian (Iain?) at H&S did me a one-off seriously 'old man' silencer but it's only 3", and even tapers to 2.5" internally at the tailpipe (with its own diddy little silencer in there - awww ). Certainly does the job well! But I think you need more like 3.5"?

There is a company in Cheshire that do custom exhausts and silencers from scratch. The silencers are double skin jobbies, and come in any size you want.

Sound reduction from:

length of silencer, longer is quieter
diameter of inner tube, smaller is quieter
outer diamter of can, larger is quieter

David,

Did I see a Kemp's Engineers Handbook (red, about 3.5 inches thick, million pages) at your place? If so that certainly has some formulae about absorbtion silencers which you might find useful.

A resonator will also help at specific engine speed(s).

I dunno if you did?

I was thinking more of making the zorst myself.. so Long Fat silencers.. and a few of them..

Tailpipe may have to be two 3" dia..

David,

Just been out to measure it. Its a 3" inlet and outlet so I think it would not flow well enough for that sort of power.

Was thinking you had gone soft or made friends with the neighbours.. until you mentioned the two 3inch tail pipes..

JP Exhausts in Cheshire made my 4" dia b/b. Good workmanship and turnaround. It is stupid loud though, even with a resonator in the c/c. Two 2" b/b's would be the better solution regarding noise vs flow.
