dmel,

as already been discussed , the temperature of the charge going to the cylinders has less to do with intake temp and more to do with the turbo heating it then the intercooler cooling it.

Question

I own a MY99 and would like to know whether a PANEL air filter does provide induction noise. I currently use the standard filter and I am thinking of swapping it for an ITG or K&N filter.

Hi Dmel,

I have fitted an ITG panel filter to my car, and I can't say that induction noise has increased noticably - maybe very, very slightly if I was listening hard for it, but not to the extent that I would notice otherwise.

I've re-read your post, and I can't tell if increased induction noise is a desirable characteristic or not!.

Rgds,

Alex

No additional noise from my ITG filter! If you want the noise, get an air inductor and a BIG dump valve!!

I'm about to fit a K&N 57i to my MY97 car, so I'll let you know whether there is a big increase in noise!

Failing that I'm sure young 'Sideways' could let you know, as he has one fitted to his MY98 car.

I would like to have some induction noise, but I don't want a cone filter because, as it has been already discussed, it is useful to take advantage of the current setup which sucks in air from the colder areas of the engine bay.

Dmel,

If you want induction noise with a panel filter, you need to remove the resonator in the right-hand wing (driver's side for RHD).

Air flows from the front of the engine bay, through the wing to a plastic "bladder" and then from there to the airbox.

If you remove the resonator and replace it with some tubing, induction noise will increase. If you install a funnel and pipe directly from the front of the car, you will get increased air flow.

To get to the resonator, you need to unclip the plastic liner at the front of the right-hand (RHD driver's side) wheel arch and move forward.

Thanks

Gavin

The original airbox RETAINS more heat than a cone filter setup....

Especially in traffic

IMHO of course !!

All the evidence I have seen shows that cone filters are espescially poor when sitting in traffic and driving at low speeds. The cone filters are more exposed and suck in more hot air from the engine bay as there is little outside air flow through the engine bay. As the cars speed picks up the temperature difference between the two types of filter is reduced and the flow advantages of the cone filter start to show.

Lee, I agree with you although I do not know the exact numbers. I would be ready to believe that differences in temp. between different areas of the engine bay may be 10 degrees and temp. difference before and after the compressor (before intercooler) something like 80 degrees? Does this sound reasonable?

The question is why loose this 10 degree advantage? Do cone filters provide increased air flow compared to panel filters?

Well, if you believe the blurb here's (supposedly) the advantages :

1) The inner wing airbox and ducting is claimed to be restrictive in itself. Any mod to remove this removes the restriction.
2) Induction kits claim to "straighten out" the airflow, reducing air tumbling and other hocus-pocus.
3) Induction kits claim to offer a larger overall surface area to pull air in (being 360degrees) and thus claim more flow.
4) They can look tasty !

The way I look at it is in similar terms to an exhaust change - on a standard car you won't see much of an improvement..but how many race/rally cars are running on a panel filter ?

Air temps.

I have an intercooler air temp meter fitted that tells me the air temp as it leaves the intercooler and enters the throttle body.

Standard air box with panel filter,

Cruise ... within 3 deg outside air temp

Hard acceleration to 6000 in 3rd and 4th ... 25-30 deg rise.

On the track (CastleCombe) up to 45 deg rise.

After boosting the temp drops back to "normal" in about 5 mins of normal driving.

Traffic ... takes a long time (10 mins or so) to heat soak up to underbonnet temps which can be as high as 60 deg C.

Induction cone.

Differences are, only that temperature increases in trafic when the car is not moving more quickly BUT it also drops much more quickly as the car starts to move cos the standard air box also gets hot and the acts like a small oven retaining heat.

After boosting temp also recovers much more quickly, less than 2 mins.

So IMHO the induction kit is overall just as good, and better in places, than the standard air box when it comes to temperature. I also think a car breathes much better in the mid and high ranges as well.

I use a Blitz stainless steel cone filter, HKS also very good IMHO.

Exclamation

'Flame coat on!' (when I say that I feel like that character from 'The Fantastic Four! )

Read the 'WRX Training Manual'.
Cone's win hands down. (good scientific evidence).

Independent tests have proved negligable temp difference when car is moving (Bob, Firefox)

Look Better,

Sound Better,

Feels better, oohh errr

No argument

Bob R,

Are you using the Blitz Sus stainless mesh filter ?

If so, I am hearing various stories (mainly US) from RX-7, MR2 etc. boys. It appears that this filter can really flow. However, it seems that they have made the filter *so* free-flowing that it only filters out rocks and has *no* dust filtration at all.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging this filter, just what I am hearing. Pity really as it is tasty bit of kit.

Just a warning.

Cheers

I had also been told that,so I check the internal surfaces for build up every 3 weeks or so, judging by the state of the engine bay in the vicinity of the filter if the mesh was too big then I would be seeing a residue internally.

So far I have seen nothing building up at all in 12,000 miles plus.

I take it off and wash it off every 6 weeks, not really necessary but its so easy to do, dry it with a hairdryer and stick it straight back on.
