Hello Boys and Girls
We have just taken apart a 93MY WRX for a rebuild and found that essentially it is two thirds an STi engine.
It has;
1. A closed deck block (STi)
2. Forged con rods (exactly the same as a 22B)
3. Steel crank (exactly the same as a 22B)
However it has;
1. Cast pistons
2. Hydraulic lifters
Can anyone shed some light on this as to whether this is standard or as I believe, when ordering these were cost options? Seems strange therefore that the chap who originally bought it did not tick the option of forged pistons but maybe he ran out of money.
I have read that you could have a tick box of options and that is where the STi parts may have come from.
Kind regards
Ben

The info I have states that the forged pistons were not introduced on STi until Jan 1994. So before that they would not have been an option. Solid lifters were implemented Oct 1994 on WRX and opening deck introduced at the same time.

Some more info, from one of our far away friends. Ben, this answers the question I think.
MY93 WRX is using the Legacy engine so the block is Closed deck. As for the con rods .. they are a cast type ... not forged.
STI don't make any forged con rods .... only PISTONS....... the Legacy con rod is stronger then the MY97 onwards conrod.
You can polish and shotpeen it ... and use it as a Grp. A conrod.
Centre crank journal is bigger .... same with STI .... WRX is smaller.... and Legacy engine used stronger crankshaft too.
