Hi guys,

Whilst driving to work this morning, I noticed when accelerating I'm getting quite a bit of what sounds like induction noise (similar to my old MY96, with Blitz induction fitted) and even stranger, when I went to change gear, i got a little "Pssssssh" sound like a VTA BOV. I say strange, because the car is completely standard apart from a H&S backbox!!!

Any idea's what gone wrong here? The car doesn't seem to have lost performance at all (not that I drive that fast most of the time) it's just I'm a little worried it can't mean good things.

Help!

Karlos

Any of the cars with induction kits fitted doe these. Perfectly normal, just different systems do different noises.

Question

Err, thanks for the replies guys... but it seems that neither of you have actually bothered to read what I've written! I know what induction noise is, I had an MY96 with a Blitz induction kit. What I am saying is, I don't have either and induction kit or a VTA BOV on my MY98 but my car has started making the same noises!!!

How long have you had the car?

I'd say take a good close look at the air box and inlet piping.
take a look at you air filter and check it all for condition and tightness.

Whats the idle like? if the DV re-circ hose is split the idle should be a bit rough, specialy when coming up to junctions/traffic lights.

Check that the resonator box is still in the inner wing!

Thanks for the replies fellas,

RB5, i've had the car 3 years next april. It's only done around 52k and has been dealer serviced from new. The idling is absolutely fine, no problems at all. I will check all the hoses around the airbox, but where is the dump valve on an MY98? It isn't in the same place as on my old MY96.
Paul, what is the resonator box, and do they have a habit of just falling off?

The resonator box sits in the driver side inner wing, if you take the cover of the airbox there is a hole into the inner wing where the resonator box feeds air into the airbox. I don't think that they fall of though, just thought that it may have been removed.

Nope, resonator box whatever it is hasn't been removed... well not whilst I was driving to work anyway! Will have a look but it wouldn't explain why the noise would suddenly have started happening

Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming!

Your DV will be down the right hand side of the intercooler (looking from the front of the car) its a black plastic thing with 2 large pipes and one small one coming out of it.

Karlos;

I have a MY99 Sti Type R, and before I replaced the DV for an atmospheric one, you could here it dumping (although not anywhere near as loud as an atmos one), under hard boost, you could also hear it sucking sucking air through the airbox - had it all checked, no problems, may just be colder weather = more boost = more sound?

I take it it's a MY98 or 99 then. The DV on them is connected directly to the intercooler on the right hand side and has one (small) hose connected to the inlet manifold and another larger hose which runs underneath the intercooler.

It doesn't sound like this is the problem though.

Do you have a boost gauge? if so are you running higher boost?

RB5,

The car is completely standard. All it has is a H&S backbox and that's it!
