If i wanted to build an engine with a closed deck block can i:
A) use my 93wrx head
B) Use the standard wiring loom

If i was to use a stroker kit would that cause me any other unforseen problems

Closed deck is pretty rare, not only in the UK but the whole world i beleve. By Doing this I assume you are after well more than 500bhp which has countless (financial??) difficulties.

I'd suggest doing a lot of reaserch into this before posting questions to people who have built scoobs of this power.

closed deck blocks are not rare.. fitted to all early legacy turbos and some early imprezas...

all phase 1 and phase 2 heads will bolt to it.. however to use the std loom would require phase 1 heads ie 92 - 98 (98 iirc)

Valve to piston interference should be your concern when stroking it..

HI:

I think the closed deck engine was built until the MY98 Turbos. My MY98 have the EJ20G engine, which is a closed deck. From MY99 (EJ205 engine) to onwards subaru changed the block to the semiclosed one.

By the way, What are the real gains that you can get from this engine?

I don't think that statement is quite right for cars in the UK. Certainly, many of the very early (93-94ish) legacy turbos and imprezas had CDB's as standard, but after a point it seems to have become a factory option rather than standard kit.

Yup my 1995 WRX engine was open deck. Early 95 they stopped doing closed deck blocks (apart from STI's to 1996) and the RA were closed deck always I think....

Not 100% on that but definetely not to 1998.

Hi Guys:

Is the EJ20 version "G" a closed deck? or simply the "G" doesn't have nothing to do with the "closeness"

Regards

The G series can be closed or open (dependent on year of manufacture). The K series came into being in '97, these are open deck.

IIRC UK (and Australian?) spec cars continued with the G series until '98.

So...

How you can check whether the block is closed or semiclosed?

Fredysan, The only CERTAIN check for a CDB is the cross hatching marks that you find on the block casings. There are various suggested ways posted here from time to time and in all of our experience there is only the one certain test. Legacy 2.0 twin cam and EARLY Impreza is where they come from.

If the cross hatching is there on the block casting above the oil filter or modine then it is DEFINITELY CDB every time. The cross hatching occurs in many places but is not certain in any other place than as above.

Someone will tell you that the casting by the oil pressure switch is also a possibility, this is not proven for sure as when we checked several blocks here there were a number with the supposed strengthened casting at the oil switch that were not CDB.

If you perhaps need a mail of what I'm talking about I can arrange a few pics as well email direct to you.

Kind regards - Good luck and mail me on dob@apiengines.com if I can help any more

There's one more definite check for a closed deck block... but popping the heads (and gaskets ) off is a little extreme.

Wink

Moray, It is also possible to stick a finger down the hole where the water cross over pipe bolts and you can feel the underneath of th e closed bit . l hate doing it because it feels as if your finger will never come out again and invariably skins your knuckle.
Alternatively you can see through the same hole with a torch and a dentists mirror !! Gynaecologists are really useful for telling the difference. LOL
