Question

Have got a standard MY03 WRX and I was firmly comitted for a mail order ecutek + full de-cat until I read reports in the MRT forums of Ecutek causing an overload of the standard fuel pump in MY03wrxs and STIs and as a result leaning of the fuel mixture and melted pistons. There is no Subaru specialist in my country and my DIY skills are poor so upgrading the fuel pump is out of the question.

Have read many good reports on Ecutek but such reliability issues are worrying.

Advice anyone?

Sapkan,

It is true that if you want to go the Ecutek route then you should consider fitting an uprated fuel pump to ensure adequate fuel flow else you do run the risk of engine damage. Ecutek tuners here in the UK usually go down that route.

I suggest that if you can't do the job yourself, ie change the fuel pump, then see a mechanic who can. However consider carefully whether it is wise to upgrade performance via an Ecutek remap without ensuring adequate fuel flow is in place.

If you do a search on here there are plenty of threads on thesubject to enlighten you.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

WB

Hey,

I did a mail in remmap and was concerned about changing the fuel pump as well. Honestly changing the fuel pump is a piece of cake and the most basic mechanic could change it. Just make sure you only have about 1/4 tank of gas when you do the change. Honestly it is very easy to change it (about 20 - 30 mins).

Cheers,
Ray

On a WRX no need but an STI yes.

I know of several WRX cars with EcutTek re-maps and not one of them has had a fuel pump replaced due to it maxing out.
The STI'S are known to have a problem but thats all.

Carry on with what you plan and dont bother with the fuel pump.

Here are the instructions for installing a fuel pump (this is for the old shape I think, but it is 90% the same).

I used these when replacing my STI pump and it was pretty easy.

You normally need to change the pump with STIs, generally you don't with a WRX. My MY02 WRX has shown healthy delta dash readings, injector duty cycle etc with the standard pump and ECUTEK and exhaust running 284bhp/272lbft. IMHO the standard pump is fine unless you're looking at >300bhp
