When reversing up my drive if I had full lock on I used to get a funny noise. Anyway, its gotten worse. Like a screeching and not just when on full lock. Got in her this morning and started the engine (freezing cold out by the way) and I wobbled the steering and it was all lumpy and I heard the screeching from the engine bay again.
So, is this a simple lose belt or is my power steering on the way out? God, I am so disheartend

Look feckin where? It all looks dirty and made of metal to me! Come on, I cant drive it brilliantly and know whats under the bonet you know.
Even if I did find it (bearing in mind I sold my hand book to someone off here) what oil would I put in it?

Karen,
You shouldn't really hold the steering on full lock, it puts pressure on the seals in the rack, and 'could' make it go wrong earlier, you may just have a loose belt (on the car!!), that needs tightening, so shouldn't really be to much of a drama!
Ron.

What.. and get my hands dirty?
(embarrassingly doesnt even know where the location of the oil for power steering is)
If you have a new age car, the reservoir is attached to the side of the radiator/chassis leg on the driver's side. The reservoir is clear so just read the level off the marks.
If, as I suspect, you have a slipping belt, get someone to (just for a couple of seconds) hold the car on full lock, and you should be able to pinpoint the sound, and probably also see the pas pump pulley skidding against the belt. If this is the case, it's relatively simple to loosen the alternator retaining bolts, tighten the tensioner a couple of turns and tighten back up. However, if you're not comfortable under the bonnet, probably best leave to a man.
... and besides, its dark

Was Andy there ?
I was there on Friday to have rear discs fitted , whilst waiting for them to start the job Andy clunked his head on something in the workshop and was rushed to A+E.
